Crush cut ties to Rodman
The Orange County Crush granted Dennis Rodman’s request to be
released from his contract, a team spokesman said Monday.
Rodman, 43, made his first and only appearance with the American
Basketball Association team Thursday night in a home victory over Las
Vegas.
He started the game, but played only briefly, before being
sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Eagles are soaring
* SOCCER: Haley Rosner scored two goals to lead the Estancia High
girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Savanna in a
nonleague game Monday at TeWinkle Middle School.
Estancia goalie Julia Tasedan, playing in the first half, had one
save. Taylor West had two saves in the second half for the Eagles
(4-1-1), who open Golden West League play against Orange at 3 p.m.
today at TeWinkle.
Estancia wins handily
* BASKETBALL: The Estancia High boys basketball team built an 18-2
lead after one quarter and rolled to a 62-43 victory over Santiago in
the first round of the Garden Grove tournament Monday at Santiago
High.
Senior Carlos Pinto scored 24 points, including mking 7 of 8 from
the free-throw line, where the Eagles were 15 of 16.
Coach Jason Simco said he was pleased with the first half, but was
unhappy that the Cavaliers (2-5) outscored his reserves, 29-25, in
the final two periods.
The Eagles (4-1) meet a strong Valencia team in a quarterfinal
game Thursday at 6 p.m. at Garden Grove.
“They’re huge,” Simco said. “They’re 6-foot-9, 6-7 and 6-7 and the
6-9 kid is dynamite. So we better get our act together before
Thursday.”

Loper leads Lightning
* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School senior Matt Loper scored a
game-high 22 points to lead the Lightning to a 63-33 boys basketball
victory over Calvary Baptist in the opening game of pool play at the
Tarbut V’Torah tournament Monday in Irvine.
Loper, a 6-foot-3 point guard, added a team-high 10 rebounds.
The win upped Sage’s record to 6-1, while Calvary Baptist fell to
2-3.
Stephen Hancock had 10 points, while Robert Wee, up from the
junior varsity, chipped in four points, three assists and three
steals.

Newport pins Uni
* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High’s wrestling team defeated
visiting University, 48-29, in a nonleague meet Monday.
Both Kyle Molina and Jessee Marshall won by pin, Molina in the
135-pound division and Marshall in the 152-pound division. Brian
Perez (189) won by decision, 14-7.
Newport (2-1) wrestles in the Newport-Mesa district championships
Thursday at Corona del Mar High.
Titans top Eagles
* WATER POLO: Estancia High goalie Katie Mahan made 16 saves, but
visiting Tesoro was too much in an 8-2 nonleague girls water polo
victory Monday.
Carolina Barnes and Courtney Hess had goals for the Eagles (4-5),
who return to action Wednesday at home against La Quinta.
Tesoro improved to 7-3.

Mustangs overrun
* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High boys soccer team was blanked, 5-0,
Monday in a nonleague game at Mater Dei.
Costa Mesa Coach Eugene Day said his team lacked focus as the
Monarchs added onto a 2-0 halftime lead to drop the Mustangs to
2-3-1.
“We need to pick up a soccer attitude,” Day said.
Shorthanded Mesa falls
* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team, playing
without star Tracy Bjelland, lost to El Dorado, 62-26, in the first
game of pool play in the El Dorado tournament Monday at El Dorado
High.
Bjelland has missed the last two games with a cut over one eye,
Mustangs Coach Jim Weeks said. She could return today or Thursday.

18 points, but the visiting Anteaters fell to Eastern Washington,
65-50, in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday.
UCI freshman Katie Curtis scored a team-high 19 for the Anteaters
(0-5).
