Sea Kings defeat tourney host
The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team took third place in the
Duarte tournament, defeating Duarte, 57-56, in the third-place
consolation game Saturday at Duarte High.
Duarte was down, 57-55, with five seconds remaining as Amanda Near
drove the court and was fouled by CdM (2-5) beyond the arc. CdM
escaped, though, as she only hit one of three free throws.
Katie Schulte led the Sea Kings with 13 points and was nominated
for the Duarte all-tournament team.
The Sea Kings open play in the Buena Park tournament at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday against Magnolia.

Richey, Loebe win big
* WRESTLING: Corona del Mar High seniors Robby Richey and Matt
Loebe both went 9-0 and won their weight classes during the two-day
Magnolia 10-way individual wrestling tournament that ended Saturday
at Magnolia.
Richey, a heavyweight, pinned all of his opponents, as did Loebe
in the 135-pound weight class.
Senior Taylor Alston (119) went 8-1 to finish second.
Newport wins big
* WATER POLO: Anne Belden scored four goals, while Melissa Wheeler
and Leah Robertson each had two goals to lead the Newport Harbor High
girls water polo team to a 12-5 victory over host Coronado Saturday.

Estancia secures third
* BASKETBALL: The Estancia High boys basketball team rallied from
an early 9-0 deficit to defeat Fountain Valley, 43-40, for third
place in the La Quinta tournament Saturday at La Quinta High.
Senior Carlos Pinto finished with 25 points, including two
three-point shots and junior Michael McDaniels finished with 10
points and two three-pointers.
Estancia (3-1) plays Santiago in the Garden Grove tournament
Monday at 6 p.m. at Santiago High.

Lightning finish fifth
* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School defeated Calipatria, 42-37, in the
fifth-place game of the La Jolla Country Day boys basketball
tournament Saturday.
Senior Matt Loper had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the
Lightning (5-1). Freshman Jamie McGee added 14 points for the
winners, for whom Coach Steve Keith credited strong defensive play by
junior Tim Lefler.
Calipatria fell to 2-3.
Sage returns to action Monday when it meets Calvary Baptist in the
opening round of the Tarbut V’Torah tournament at 3:15 p.m. at Tarbut
V’Torah.

Newport grabs 7th
* BASKETBALL: Newport Harbor High’s boys basketball team defeated
Temecula, 40-36, for seventh place in the Bill Reynolds Classic
Saturday at Newport Harbor.
The Sailors (1-4) outscored Temecula, 16-9, in the fourth quarter
to take their first victory of the season. Senior guard Tony Yaghjian
scored nine points to lead Newport, while sophomore Weston Dunlap had
seven.

Mustangs bounced
* BASKETBALL: Costa Mesa High junior guard Bethany Vergara canned
three three-pointers and scored a team-high 13 points in the absence
of injured teammate and leading scorer Tracy Bjelland, but the
Mustangs’ girls basketball team lost to designated visitor Santa Ana
Valley, 46-43, in the seventh-place game Saturday at the Fountain
Valley tournament.
Judie Akansel scored 10 points and added five steals for Costa
Mesa (2-4), which allowed 20 offensive rebounds and was outscored,
18-12, by the Falcons (2-3) in the fourth quarter.
Jennifer Courtney paced Mesa with seven rebounds.
Bjelland, who suffered a cut above her eye in Friday night’s game,
is scheduled to miss Monday’s 6 p.m. tipoff in the El Dorado
tournament against the host Hawks and Tuesday’s game against Santiago
in the tournament.

Sea Kings fall short
* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team lost to Martin
Luther King Jr. of Riverside, 1-0, in both teams’ third game of pool
play in the Mater Dei tournament Saturday at Mater Dei.
Corona del Mar (1-5) was eliminated in the tournament and will
play Costa Mesa at 3:15 p.m. Monday at Orange Coast College.
Anteaters fall to Davis
* BASKETBALL: Lauren Yadon had a game-high 27 points for the UC
Irvine women’s basketball team, but it wasn’t enough as the Anteaters
fell to visiting UC Davis, 76-73, Saturday at the Bren Events Center.
Angie Ned added 11 points for UCI (0-4), while Katie Curtis had
10. Ashley Biggins had 11 rebounds against UC Davis (3-6).
