The Kepilino sisters, Wahine and Rebecca, scored in double figures

and the Edison High girls’ basketball team laid claim to the Lady

Centurion Classic championship by holding off El Dorado, 42-37, in

the tournament final at Century High.

Rebecca Kepilino was named MVP of the Classic.

She capped off the tournament with a 10 points, 12 rebounds effort

against El Dorado.

Wahine Kepilino, named all-tournament, led all scorers with 19

points.

Alysse Van Leer added seven points for Edison, which opened its

season and play in the classic with a 56-38 win over Kennedy.

“I think we played a little inconsistently the first three games,

but we played well against a well-coached and strong team in El

Dorado,” said Edison coach Corey Kelly, whose team lost in the

classic finals the past two years but is now 4-0 this year.

In the classic’s third-place game, Huntington Beach was a 48-32

winner over Laguna Beach.

The Oilers led from the start in winning their third game in four

starts this season.

Katia Hadj-Hamou and Jasmine Erving each scored 12 points and

Karrisa Plotnik scored seven for Huntington.

The Oilers had launched their season with a 62-39 drubbing of

Irvine at the classic. Erving led all scorers with 21 points and

Hadj-Hamou scored 15.

Huntington went 3-1 in the classic. Last year, the Oilers went 1-3

at the same event.

“A 3-1 start to the season definitely exceeded my expectations,”

Huntington coach Russ McClurg said. “The girls did a great job.”

At the Woodbridge Tournament, Marina earned the fifth-place trophy

by routing Capistrano Valley, 61-33. Allison Budsinski and Maureen

Holloway led the Vikings with 10 points apiece.

In boys’ basketball, Edison’s season opener was a success as the

host Chargers ran past Corona del Mar, 54-34.

Joe Ziemann scored 14 points and Kevin Reed and Thomas Marcin each

had nine points for Edison, which came back Monday to dispose of

Saddleback, 46-28, in the opening round of the La Quinta Tournament.

T.J. Lipold of the Chargers nearly matched Saddleback’s total team

output with 20 points of his own.

Ocean View, which opened its season in Texas, edged Carroll of San

Antonio in triple overtime, 60-59, in consolation action at the Lone

Star Invitational in San Antonio.

Clint Amberry’s 26 points paced the Seahawks, who also got 11

points each from Brad Sweezy and John Greiner.

In wrestling, Edison finished second overall at the El Dorado

Holiday Invitational and Huntington Beach and Marina each earned

third-place finishes at the Foothill Classic and Santa Margarita

10-Way, respectively.
