Midget Chargers win Orange Bowl

The Huntington Beach Midget Chargers won the Orange Bowl title for

the second straight year by running past Canyon Hills, 36-14, in Pop

Warner Football play.

Canyon Hills struck early to take a 6-0 lead into the second

quarter.

But the Chargers settled down and drove 80 yards, capped by Alex

Mascarenas’ four-yard yard touchdown run.

Huntington went on to score on its next two possessions, the first

touchdown coming when Preston Spence ran five yards for the score on

a fourth-and-goal play. The second strike came when Garrett Heckel

and Jeff Crissman connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass with just

three seconds left in the first half.

Those two scores gave the Chargers a commanding, 22-6 halftime

lead.

Heckel scored two second half touchdowns to complete Huntington’s

scoring.

The Chargers defense was led by William Andrew, Donald Sneed,

Randy Cone, Edgar Palacios, Heckel, Spence, Crissman, Mascarenas,

Trevor McCourt , Rick Campo, Wesly Graves, Jullien Herrara, Daniel

Rivera, Nick Constantini and Matt Snyder.

Previous to defeating Chino Hills, the Chargers defense had two

goal line stands in playoff wins over Anaheim and Yorba Linda.

Kevin Anderson, Donald Brandel, Bryce Brantley, Jimmy Cone,

Bradley Grunbaum, Scott Marcin , Quinten Schoonmaker, Chris Siebel

and Matt Reza led the way on offense.

HB Breakers win Thanksgiving tourney

The HB Breakers’ 13-and-Under baseball club team won a

Thanksgiving weekend tournament title at Mile Square Park.

They split their first four games to qualify for championship

play.

In the championship round, the Breakers beat the Peninsula Waves,

8-2 in the semifinals and routed the Laguna Niguel Blaze, 18-0, in

the championship game.

Throughout the tournament, the Breakers received solid pitching

from Sean Vogel, Sean Guite, Josh Lesinski, Ryan Little, Tony

Giovinetti, Brandon Adams, Nick Hanson and Kyle Boswell.

The Breakers pitching staffed was backed be the defensive play of

Jimmy Madden, Chris Lien, Alex Pinto, Daniel Givens and Aaron Ochoa.

In four qualification games, the Breakers defeated the Arsenal

(14-0) and the Long Beach Bullets (6-4) and lost to the Santa

Margarita Rattlers (10-4) and the Orange County Baseball Assn.

Extreme (6-2).0

In the semifinal win against the Waves, Vogel and Giovinetti each

had an RBI single.

The Breakers broke the game open in the third by scoring five runs

on a double by Pinto, back-to-back walks to Vogel and Guite, a

two-run single by Giovinetti and a two-run triple by Madden.

In the sixth, the Breakers scored two more runs when Lien singled,

Adams was hit by a pitch and Hanson singled.

Guite pitched four innings and allowed just one run and two hits

and Adams pitched the final three innings, allowing only one run and

two hits.

In the tournament final against the Laguna Niguel Blaze, the

Breakers offense exploded for 18 runs on 13 hits and seven walks in a

game halted after three innings.

They scored five runs in the first inning, twice in the second and

tacked on 11 more in the third.

Vogel pitched the three innings and, after yielding a leadoff

triple, retired nine in row -- four by strikeout -- for the win.

The Breakers outscored their six tournament opponents, 52-22.

In scoring their 52 runs, the Breakers had a team batting average

of .331 and had an on-base percentage of .462.

Vogel had eight hits, four RBIs, eight runs scored and three

walks, overall.

Guite had eight hits, eight RBIs, seven runs scored and two walks,

Pinto had seven hits, five RBIs, eight runs scored and five walks,

Giovinetti had six hits and seven RBIs, Hanson had five hits and five

RBIs, Madden had four singles, Lien and Little each reached base

seven times and scored nine runs between them, Lesinski reached base

six times and scored 4 runs and an injured Ochoa and Boswell each had

one hit in each of the two games they played.

Extra base hits by the Breakers included triples by Madden, Ochoa,

Boswell, Little and Giovinetti. In the doubles dept., Vogel had

three, Pinto and Madden each had a pair and Guite, Hanson, Lesinski,

and Adams each had one.
