Sea Kings earn All-CIF honors

Jordan Smith, a senior outside hitter for the Corona del Mar High

girls volleyball team, was named CIF Southern Section Division III

Co-Player of the Year and CdM’s Coach Bill Christiansen was named

Co-Coach of the Year.

Smith shares her title with Santa Margarita’s Blair Socci and

Christiansen shares his title with Michelle Sarkees, also of Santa

Margarita.

Joining Smith on the first-team All-CIF are senior middle blocker

Lindsey Ensign and sophomore opposite setter Kelly Christian.

The Sea Kings won the Pacific Coast League and CIF Southern

Section Division III-A championships and advanced to the semifinals

of the CIF State Division III championships this year.

Newport Harbor’s Kiley Hall, a senior outside hitter, was named

All-CIF Division II second team.

Catherine Dailey, Sage Hill’s junior outside hitter, was named

All-CIF Division IV second team.

Eagles blank Aztecs

* SOCCER: Haley Rosner and Jennifer Thomas each scored two goals

while Sarah Braunsdorf added one to boost the Estancia High girls

soccer team to a 5-0 nonleague victory over host La Quinta Tuesday.

Thomas tallied her two goals in the second half, when the Eagles

(3-1-1) scored four times.

Taylor West, Marina Abdul, Thomas, Braunsdorf and Taylor Carpenter

all had assists while goalkeeper Julie Tasedan made one save for the

Eagles, who face nonleague foe Savanna Monday before opening Golden

West League play against visiting Orange at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Sage Hill still perfect

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team defeated visiting

Westminster, 1-0, in a nonleague game Tuesday to stay perfect at 6-0.

The game was a draw until Emily Webb scored in the 77th minute on

a free kick from 18-yards out after freshman Kellee Kim was fouled.

The Sage girls soccer program is off to its best start since the

school opened. The team visits Laguna Beach Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Three Sailors stand out

* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High’s wrestling team had three

winners, all by fall, in its 66-18 nonleague dual-meet loss to host

Huntington Beach Tuesday.

Sophomore Bruce Hartshorn won by pin in the first period of the

heavyweight division while sophomore Josh Hughes came from behind to

claim the 119-pound division in the second period. Junior Victor

George (125) added another victory with a pin in the third period for

the Sailors (1-1) who compete in the Andrew Pena tournament at Irvine

High Saturday.

Corona del Mar wins

* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team defeated

visiting Ocean View, 2-1, in a nonleague game Tuesday.

Junior Kelly Morgan intercepted a pass in the 21st minute and got

the upper hand a one-on-one matchup with Ocean View’s goalie for the

game-winning goal for the Sea Kings (1-2).

Jessica Mazura scored the first goal for CdM off of a crossing

pass from Morgan in the 10th minute.

The Sea Kings play in the Mater Dei tournament Thursday, Friday

and Saturday. CdM faces Mission Viejo Thursday at 2:30 p.m., Arcadia

Friday at 5 p.m. and Martin Luther King Jr. of Riverside Saturday at

2 p.m.

Sea Kings fall by 29

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team lost

to Sierra Vista, 76-47, in its second game of the Duarte tournament

Tuesday at Duarte High.

Allie Duernberger led the Sea Kings (1-4) with 13 points, while Katie Schulte had 12.

The Sea Kings play Muir in the same tournament Thursday at 4:30

p.m.

Mesa suffers first loss

* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team dropped its first

match of the season, 4-1, to host Aliso Niguel Tuesday.

The goals were the first points allowed this season by the

Mustangs (4-1).

The Wolverines (3-0) took an early lead on a corner kick, but

junior Jasmin Day tied the game in the before halftime.

Day received a lead pass from senior Eva Garcia up the left wind

and moved past an Aliso defender before placing her shot in the back

of the net.

The Wolverines scored on another corner kick, and then damp

conditions gave Aliso two more goals.

A Costa Mesa defender slipped in mud and a Wolverine closed in on

the ball for an open shot. Moments later, the Mustangs goalkeeper

slipped in mud to give Aliso another clear shot at the net.

Costa Mesa plays Riverside Poly Friday at Worthy Park in

Huntington Beach at the Ocean View tournament.
