Saltus sizzling in Asia

Bryan Saltus, a Newport Harbor High product who won the Costa Mesa
city golf championship two straight years (1995-96), sits just five
shots off the lead after the first two rounds of the Asian Tour’s
Omega Hong Kong Open following his 68 Friday.
Saltus (66-68 -- 134) is 6-under-par and in a four-way tie for
sixth after play concluded Friday on the par-70 Hong Kong Golf Club’s
Composite Course.
Saltus, who has played on the Canadian Tour, is one shot ahead of
two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal (67-68 -- 135) and two
strokes in front of Nick Faldo (69-67 -- 136), a six-time major
winner on the PGA Tour.
Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez leads the field at 11-under (65-64 --
129).
Bailey pitches shutout
* SOCCER: Costa Mesa High’s Cindy Mendoza kicked a game-winning
penalty kick in the second half and Mesa goalkeeper Kindra Bailey
posted eight saves in the shutout as the Mustangs earned a 1-0 girls
soccer victory over Mayfair in the first round of the Ocean View
tournament Friday.
Sage Hill takes Century
* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team defeated Century,
4-2, on penalty kicks in overtime in the Westminster tournament
Friday at Westminster High.
Freshman Claire Josephson scored off an assist from Kellee Kim in
the first half for Sage’s only goal in regulation, but Century fought
back and tied it in the second half to force overtime.
Sage (2-0) made three penalty kicks to Century’s one for the win.
The Lightning continue play in the tournament today at 10 a.m.
against Brethren Christian and noon against Westminster.
Eagles even Vikings
* SOCCER: Estancia High senior midfielder Angel Cirilo scored from
inside the 18-yard box in the 60th minute to even host Marina and the
two boys soccer teams’ defenses held strong from there to force a 1-1
nonleague tie Friday.
The Eagles (0-1-1) fired 19 shots while Marina (0-0-1) tallied 13
against Estancia goalkeeper Marco Burciaga, who made 12 saves.
Seniors Rafael Hernandez and Cesar Gonzalez, along with junior
Pedro Duarte, each had several shots for the Eagles, who face host
Fountain Valley at 3:15 p.m. Monday.
Anteaters downed
* BASKETBALL: Montana State shot 58 percent from the field in the
second half and went on to defeat UC Irvine, 67-52, in nonconference
women’s basketball action before 1,727 at Worthington Arena in
Bozeman, Mont., Friday night.
The loss overshadowed a strong performance by UCI freshman guard
Katie Curtis, who scored 25 points and tied the school record for
three-point baskets with seven (in 11 attempts).
The Anteaters return to action hosting UC Davis Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.

Coast falls at Cuesta
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team
lost to Citrus, 62-59, in the Cuesta tournament Friday at Cuesta
College in San Luis Obispo.
The Pirates (4-4) had one last chance to tie it with one second
remaining, but the inbound pass was fumbled away.
Rhondi Naff had a game-high 18 points for the Pirates and Crystal
McCormick had 11, including two three-pointers.
Coast plays in the third-place game of the tournament today at 2
p.m.

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High girls water polo team was
defeated by Tustin, 10-4, in the Benson Cup Friday at Esperanza High.
Allison Harris, Annie Lee, Sarah Bowman and Chandra Malapira each
had a goal for the Mustangs (2-2).

Sage Hill loses second
* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School boys soccer team lost to host
Junipero Serra of San Juan Capistrano, 2-0, in nonleague play Friday
afternoon.
Justo Sierra (3-0) took a 1-0 halftime lead over the Lightning
(0-2) and added a goal to that in the second half.
Sage is scheduled to play at Capistrano Valley Christian Tuesday
at 3:15 p.m.
