Fred Pratley
Fred Pratley died Nov. 12 of cancer. He was born in 1930.
Mr. Pratley was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and grew up in
Glendale where he was an athlete at Hoover High School. After a year
in the navy, he attended Glendale College where he set a school
record in the high jump. He earned a degree in geology at the
University of Utah where he continued to compete in the high jump,
making the Olympic trials in 1952.
Mr. Pratley moved his family to Laguna Beach in 1961 and returned
to school to earn a teaching credential. He taught at Laguna Beach
High School from 1966-69.
In 1970 he did graduate work in ocean engineering at the
University of Hawaii, and then returned to Orange County to establish
his own engineering geology consulting business. Until 1998 he owned
Coastal Geotechnical in Laguna Beach.
He was a member of the Dana Point Yacht Club and an accomplished
cellist.
Mr. Pratley is survived by his wife, Patti Burke-Pratley; daughter
Sue Pratley; son Dirk Pratley; granddaughter Willa; a brother and
numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at the
Dana Point Yacht Club, 24399 Dana Drive, Dana Point. A scholarship in
his name is being established at Laguna Beach High School.

Carolyn Van Pelt Marvin Schubert
Carolyn Van Pelt Marvin Schubert died Oct. 30 in Ojai, Calif. She
was 70.
Mrs. Van Pelt Marvin Schubert spent her summers in Laguna from an
early age and returned to live here with her husband Bob Marvin in
the ‘60s. She was active in the Assistance League, Designing Women of
the Art School and Pageant of the Masters. She was an avid golfer and
lover of the outdoors.
Mrs. Van Pelt Marvin Schubert was preceded in death by her husband
Bob Marvin in 1980 and then Gilbert Schubert in December, 2003. She
is survived by her son Jeffrey Marvin; grandsons Mathew, William and
Charlie; niece Elizabeth Van Pelt; and great niece Meryl.
Donations in her honor may be made to the Assistance League of
Laguna, 547 Catalina, Laguna Beach, Ca. 92651.
Evlyn Barrick
Evlyn Barrick, of Laguna Beach, died Nov. 20. She was 96.
Mrs. Barrick lived in her Laguna home for 30 years. She managed
the Warren Imports in Palm Springs for 25 years. She was past
president of the Soroptimist Club Lady Lions, the Garden Club and was
active with the Assistance League until she was 95.
Mrs. Barrick is preceded in death by her husband, Murray Barrick.
She is survived by her son Ed Mee, formerly of Three Arch Bay;
brother Harry Lawrence of Laguna Beach; step-daughter Marlyn Barrick;
step-son Randell Barrick; niece Susan Lawrence; and grandchildren
Michelle Reeb, Kelly Mee and Loren Barrick.
Barton R. Long
Barton R. Long, of Laguna Beach, died Nov. 25 after a short
illness. He was 71.
He was a 30-year resident of Laguna. Mr. Long and his wife, Peggy,
were members of the St. Catherine Siena Church.
Mr. Long is survived by his sons Justin, of Laguna Beach, Lewis,
of Trabuco Canyon; daughters Claire, Jennifer and Catherine Long and
Margaret Martin all of Laguna Beach and Elizabeth Haverson of
Indiana; a brother Thomas; and five grandchildren.
Services were held at McCormick and Son Mortuary in Laguna Beach.
