13. Scored 20 points to win the championship by three in a format
which awarded one point for a par, two for each birdie and three for
an eagle. Won the 70-79 age division -- spread over four rounds of
match play -- to qualify for the 18-hole final. Two of the matches
came down to the last hole. Realized that “other players have the
same problems I do. There are nerves when you have to make that putt”
... Played guard on Compton High’s boys basketball team that went
32-0 en route to winning a CIF championship in 1952, his senior year
... Said Compton won 57 straight games in one span during his junior
and senior seasons ... Played at Pepperdine University for three
years ... Taught for 20 years at Big Bear High before becoming a
