* Blakeney Boggs has joined the teaching staff at Newport Beach
Golf Course.
Boggs, a certified PGA and LPGA golf professional and former USC
women’s golfer, came on board five weeks ago to replace Craig
Hatfield, who became the director of golf at a course in San Felipe,
Mexico.
Newport head professional and golf shop manger John Leonard said
Boggs formerly taught at Strawberry Farms and Oak Creek golf clubs in
Irvine.
“We’ve known her a long time and now she has the opportunity to
teach all types of beginners to intermediate [golfers], men, women
and kids,” Leonard said.
The shorter days traditionally mean fewer golfers seeking lessons,
Leonard said.
“But in the heyday [spring and summer], she might average 20
lessons a week,” he said.
Boggs, like Hatfield and many other instructors, uses video to
record a player’s swing and then replay it to them on a screen as a
form of teaching.
Boggs’ hiring gives Newport five golf instructors, who also
include John Sullivan, Bill Wyman, Kevin Wilhelm along with Leonard.
* The next qualifier for the Jones Cup will come from Santa Ana
Country Club, which will stage its senior gross championship Saturday
and Sunday ).
Golfers will compete in three age divisions for 36 holes of stroke
play with no handicaps.
Boyd Martin is the defending champion.
The winner will receive an invitation into next summer’s Jones
Cup, an 18-hole competition pitting foursomes from each of the four
private clubs in Newport-Mesa against one another.
A men’s, women’s and senior club champion, along with a golf staff
professional from each of the four clubs, comprise a foursome.
Big Canyon Country Club’s Mike Carpenter (men’s) and Danny Bibb
(senior), along with Mesa Verde’s Steve Rhorer (men’s) have already
qualified for the Jones Cup.
