Jr. Pee Wee Green Chargers to play for title

The Huntington Beach Jr. Pee Wee Green Chargers shut out the Santa

Margarita Titans, 25-0, in a semifinal showdown at Millikan High in

Long Beach to advance to the Orange County championship game in Pop

Warner Football.

Coach Marc Dubois’ Green Chargers will take an 8-1 record into the

1 p.m. title game Saturday against the Costa Mesa Mustangs at La

Mirada High School.

The Green Chargers are the first Jr. Pee Wee team to reach the

championship in Huntington Beach Pop Warner history, Dubois said.

Last year, the chapter’s Jr. Midget team won the championship and

advanced to the national championship tournament in Florida.

Dubois attributed his team’s success to a “great group” of

hard-working kids, coaches and staff, along with very supportive

group of parents.

“I can’t say enough about the spirit and enthusiasm we have on

this team,” Dubois said. “It’s incredible.”

The Green Chargers coaching staff is composed of Dubois and

assistant coaches Joe Baker, Jeff Peth, Craig Trulli, Steve Springer.

The Green Chargers are Marcus Stepancich, Dillon Lovsteen, Jacob

Hauser, Curren Provost, Shay McAfee, Joseph Hatley, George (Jack)

Dennis, Ryan Shean, Justin Corson, Eric Vogelsang, Tyler Baker,

Taylor Schmidt, Christopher Ogilvie, Brenton Visnoski, Daniel Warren,

Mitchell Clark, Ryan Gross, Steven Springer, Jayson Payne, Brandon

Gauweiler, Joshua Clay, Joey Sandoval, Joshua Peth, Cole Fraser,

In Jr. All-American Football action:

Huntington Beach 46, South Bay 8

Huntington Beach opened the playoffs Saturday in convincing

fashion, as five different Dolphins scored touchdowns.

Jared Bennett scored the first two touchdowns of the game on runs

of 1 and 4 yards. Additional scores came on Tyler Steen’s 1-yard run

in the third quarter, Dylan Garcia’s 14-yard jaunt, Riley Woods’

20-yard quarterback bootleg and Dontaie Ferguson’s 30-yard reverse.

The lone South Bay score came on a 70-yard fumble return after the

Packers stripped a Dolphins’ ballcarrier.

Huntington Beach takes on the Corona Panthers in a second-round

playoff game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Carson High School.

In girls’ youth basketball action:

Sowers squads now 6-0

Sowers Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls’ basketball

teams capped an unbeaten regular season as both squads defeated

TeWinkle. The two teams will take identical 6-0 records into the

playoffs, which got underway this week.

“It’s great to go through a season undefeated, but we need to not

be overly satisfied, because there is still plenty of work ahead,”

Sowers coach Kyle Morita said.

Eighth Grade Division

Sowers 42, TeWinkle 4

Kelly Peterson and Mary Madden combined for 26 points in a little

more than two quarters of playing time as the Lady Vikings rolled. In

addition to the duo’s scoring punch, Morita was most impressed by the

play of his bench.

“Strange things happen in the playoffs, like injuries and fouls,

and you need someone to come off the bench and give you big minutes,”

he said. “Last year for us, it was Michelle Tseng. We were really

impressed tonight by the play of Iesha Lumbruno and Liane Sueda.”

Sowers will open the playoffs with perennial power Ensign in a

rematch of last year’s eighth-grade final.

Seventh Grade Division

Sowers 32, TeWinkle 8

In the first game of the doubleheader, returner Lindsey McCloskey

scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the

Lady Vikings.

Brooke Thomas added eight points for Sowers, which will play

cross-town rival Dwyer in the first round of the playoffs.

In youth baseball action:

Pony League Dodgers win pair

The Dodgers blew the game open by scoring six runs in the sixth

inning. Zanala, Schellenger, Jacob Springer and Danny Tierney each

singled before Jonathan Combest hit an RBI double to deep center and

Zach Michaels blasted a three-run triple to right field.

In the 16-2 rout of the Red Sox, the Dodgers racked up 15 hits.
