Newport Coast’s Dave Kobrine took first place in the master’s

division at the Clydesdale National Marathon Championships held in

San Antonio on Sunday. The master’s division is for runners who are

at least 40. His brother, Eric Kobrine, a former Newport Beach

resident, was the first-place finisher in the under-40 division. The

Clydesdale Marathon Championships consist of a 26.2-mile race for

competitors who weigh at least 190 pounds ... The Orange Coast

College speech and debate team finished fourth at the Cougar Classic

Speech Tournament held Oct. 16 and 17 at Azusa Pacific University. In

individual achievements, Amy Pham earned a gold medal in the novice

persuasion category, David Sinatra won the top award for novice

parliamentary debate, and Nicolle Carpenter earned a silver medal for

senior informative speaking ... Costa Mesa’s Suzanne King was sworn

in as a volunteer with Court Appointed Special Advocates on Oct. 20.

King completed 30 hours of training and will work with a child who is

in the Orange County foster care system. Group volunteers are

appointed by the courts to mentor abused children ... Jacqueline

Becker of Newport Beach had a big weekend with the Yale University

women’s volleyball team on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, when the team

defeated Princeton and Penn on the road. Becker racked up 134

assists, including a career-high 80 against the Princeton Tigers. She

reached second on Yale’s all-time assists list with 2,753. Becker

posted 14 digs against Princeton and led the Bulldogs with 28 digs

against Penn.
