This coach causes

a spate of smiles

A couple of weeks ago, our 8-year-old son was chosen student of

the week at St. John the Baptist School in Costa Mesa. The children

are asked to answer numerous questions in front of their third-grade

class.

One of the questions was, “Whom do you most admire?” Our son

answered the question with, “My soccer coach, Mike.” When I asked him

to elaborate, he said Coach Mike has a kind word for everyone, never

yells and is the best coach ever!

Our American Youth Soccer League 120 U-10 coach is Mike Ferrara.

Our team is the Blue Knights. Mike is a wonderful coach, and the

children are having fun. Come check us out. We play at TeWinkle

School on Saturdays. We are the team with all the smiles! Thanks,

Mike.

Wake up, parents:

Haidl needs help

Re: “Teen cites depression after car accident,” Daily Pilot, Nov.

2. I would be depressed too if, at 19 years old, I was not allowed to

use drugs, drink alcohol, have sex and had to be home by 11 p.m. This

child is screaming for help. Are his parents blind? I hope this time

Judge Francisco Briseno can see over the sheriff’s shiny badge and

get this kid Greg Haidl off our streets and get him the help he

obviously needs.

TV show belongs on

the Walk of Shame

I am in agreement with the other residents of Newport Beach who

have written to express their disbelief over our city’s decision to

honor the cast of the television show “The OC” by awarding them a

place on the Walk of Fame (“Not in my OC,” Daily Pilot, Nov. 2). I

was further disgusted when I found out this was the first “worthy”

inductee.

I fail to see any honor in drug use, extramarital affairs or

unscrupulous business deals. It does seem par for the course,

however, for the current administration in City Hall. This is the

same group of councilmen who supported building a hotel on public

parkland.

The process that our mayor has established to evaluate potential

inductees needs review and perhaps restructuring. There are plenty of

individuals and groups in our city who would be much more deserving

of recognition. For example, how about honoring the winner of the

1970 America’s Cup? How many cities have one of these?

Now that Ridgeway has access to Hollywood, maybe he could call

Johnny Grant and find out how they decide who gets a star.

Cox claims fall

flat with reader

In Saturday’s edition of the Daily Pilot, I read the Community

Commentary written by the congressman from South County (“Environment

is a top priority”).

Nowhere did I read what he did for the residents of Newport Beach

and John Wayne Airport.

Did I miss something?
