Newport Mesa scores first on Bulldogs

Newport Mesa Infinity became the first team to score on the South

Coast Bulldogs, tying 2-2 Sunday in an AYSO Region 97 boys under-13

game.

Simon Hedrick tapped in his first goal for the club off a corner

kick taken by Rodrigo Ruvalcaba, while Juan Gonzalez struck a free

kick from 19 yards out to tie the game.

Goalkeeper Jesse Perez made several acrobatic saves for Newport.

The Bulldogs had a perfect record and had only allowed one goal in

six games prior to the Infinity clash.

On Saturday, Newport Mesa Infinity handily beat OCU, 5-1. Juan

Gonzalez had a hat trick along with goals by Sean Davis and Austin

Webster. In both games, solid midfield work by Erickson Klein, Austin

Wobrock and Shane Rocco was key. Wing backs, John Ryder and Zac

Chocek stifled many attacks. The Infinity finishes the first round of

play with a 4-2-1 record, having scored 32 goals in seven games.

In girls under-14 play:

* Newport Breakers 2, OJSC 3

OJSC scored in the first five minutes and the Breakers had to play

from behind the entire first half in the loss. The offensive duo of

Sara Gomez and Lauren DeVoy applied pressure, with Gomez finally

breaking through with an equalizing goal.

Once again OJSC scored, but Newport responded with solid mid-field

work by Alice Cope and Shannon Rohan. Gomez again scored just before

halftime.

Strong goalkeeping by Stepahnie Nealy and Stephanie Castor

combined with the defensive work of Cayla Porter, Shelby Porter and

Alex Griggs kept the score tied but OJSC was able to push in a goal

late in the game to take the victory.

* Newport Breakers 4, Pacific Soccer Club 1

The Newport Breakers applied pressure on Pacific from the

beginning of the game with Sara Gomez driving the ball for a goal

early in the first half.

The Breaker defense, led by Malia Hohl, Christina Cooley, Bailey

Johnson and Katy Storch stopped any Pacific attacks enabling the

Breaker midfielders of Shannon Rohan, Alice Cope, and Katy Storch to

feed the ball forward to Lauren DeVoy and Gomez which led to three

more goals.

Fine goalkeeping by Stephanie Castor and Stephanie Nealy secured

the 4-1 victory.

In girls under-12 play:

* Newport Beach 2, Orange 1

Erin Nelson scored the first goal of the game off a perfect pass

by Carrie D’Ippolito and Newport scored again as Toby Page found the

net on a breakaway.

Later, Orange mounted a comeback and put pressure on keepers

Patricia Nance and Luanne Baker, but strong defensive play by Ana

Truxton, Kerry Barth, Barby Zimmermann, and Stacy Healy helped turn

away the Orange attack.

* Purple Fantas 1, Winning Watermelons 0

The Purple Fantas team effort earned them a closely contested 1-0

win over the Winning Watermelons. Lauren Clemence and Madison Walsh

had excellent scoring chances before Remy Pascine popped in the

game’s only goal.

Teamwork by Andie Ward, Laura Calvillo and Katie Hurlbut bottled

up the Watermelons while the Fanta’s defense was anchored by Corey

Darling, Jordin Eakin, Ani Harbottle and Alex Kehoe in goal.

In girls under-10 play:

* Pink Pussycats 1, The Bulldogs 1

The Pink Pussycats played a strong game against the Bulldogs,

ending in a 1-1- tie. Gianna Light scored for the Pussycats following

several breakaway attempts. Courtney Buck also had several shots on

goal.

Katie Reed, Emily Nall and Casey Duckworth provided offensive

support, while Jessica Arnold anchored the defense for the Pussycats

along with Sarah Whitney.

* Angels 2, Rip Curls 1

The Angels’ defense of Hannah Walker, Caroline Johnson, Samantha

Sanchez and solid goaltending by Madison Botteron offset an early

ball control advantage by the Rip Curls’ Madison Jabara, Nicole Walsh

and Emma Howard.

The Angels’ Kelsey Long scored late in the second, but Roxanna

Crane’s goal tied the game in the third. Reo Nathan scored the

Angels’ go-ahead goal late in the off an assist by Megan Farley, Long

and Walker.

* Gryffindor Seekers 4, Mighty Green Machine 3

The Mighty Green Machine started off with a breakaway score by

Kenya Avila, but the Gryffindor Seekers quickly evened the game with

a score by Kirsten Rohan.

Seekers Katty Ayala, Anastasia Figueroa, Samantha Stalder and Lea

Phillips quickly moved the ball up field to Kirsten Rohan enabling

her to score another two goals. Playing like its name, Mighty Green

caught up with a goal by Rosalie Deliz.

Offsides penalties prevented some additional goal opportunities

for both teams. Seekers Haley Scott, Andie Strode and Taylor

Hickerson played solid defense, and Seeker goalie Jane Layton blocked

many strong scoring attempts by the Mighty Green. Seeker Analysa

Vivanco came through with the final score in the game’s last few

minutes.

In boys under-10 play:

* Raiders 3, Tsunami 1

Blake Smith, Keaton Hirsch, and Bryan Shollin played up front

while Andres Zourelli and Griffin Leggett handled the midfield in the

Raiders’ 3-1 victory. Charlie Barber and Cameron Candelaria started

at defensive fullback, with Dylan Roe at sweeper and Connor Leggett

at goal keeper.

Griffin Leggett scored a goal in the 1st quarter to give the

Raiders a 1 to 0 lead. In the second quarter, Grant Moore entered the

game at midfield, and Adam Bennani came in at forward. The aggressive

Raider defense was able to push the ball forward, and Griffin Leggett

scored two more goals for a hat trick.

In the second half, Candelaria and Leggett rotated at Goal Keeper,

and turned away many shots from Tsunami.

* Devil Rays 3, Patriots 1

The Devil Rays’ offense was led by Bob Boullon who scored twice in

the first quarter and Max Johnson who found the net in the third

quarter. R.J. Roberts, Marc Gehlke, Jake Wadman and Brandt Boucher

worked the ball well through the midfield with strategically placed

passes.

The goal was strongly defended by Lee Stevens, Zack Cornwell and

T.J. Tarazevits.

As goalies, Izaak Lofgren held the Patriots scoreless in the first

and fourth quarters, while Isaiah Suarez also prevented any scoring

in the second quarter. Rocky Gonzales showed good ball control until

he was injured in the second quarter.

* Funky Monkeys 2, Avalanche 2

The Funky Monkeys went up against the undefeated Avalanche in the

first game of the day Saturday morning, and the entire team rose to

the occasion.

Although the Avalanche had not allowed a single goal all season,

Ellery Sever managed to put two into the net with assists and

offensive support from Cole Chapin, Sean Cox, Ian Batstone, Taylor

Parks and True Tamplin.

Both Ian Mac Innis and Kolby Pearson had their best offensive day

with aggressive play and a lot of ball contact. Michael Reo and

Trevor Conway played a perfect second half as they took turns sharing

the position of goalkeeper.

In girls under-8 play:

* Hurricanes vs. Green Geckos

Abbey Pickett, Rowan Frederiksen and Kate Pipkin charged the

opponents and each scored goals. Excellent assists were made to help

set up goals by Natalie Ward, Kierstyn Yardley, and Annie LaGrandeur.

Defensive Players of the game were Amanda Sheppard, Jessica Stone,

Katie Conway and Lauren Walker who each made key defensive plays.

* The Purple People Eaters vs. The Wild Watermelons

Kira Farris had a solid performance in the first half of the game,

blocking every attempt the Watermelons made at the goal.

Sierra Stump and Haley Burg dominated the ball and making

tremendous efforts to get the ball in the goal. When the Watermelons

got the ball, Kayla Savarese and Kira were at the center line

blocking every attempt to get past.

The third quarter was Kayla Savarese and Mackenzie Hyde’s turn to

get a go at the ball, and did they ever. They kept the ball by their

goal the whole quarter, passing and making many great takeaways.

Julia Carney was in the goal the 4th Quarter and with the help of

Haley Burg, Sierra Stump and Mackenzie Hyde, nothing got by her.

* Purple Panthers vs. Blue Dolphins

Kappy Fuller and Leah Castillo both had solid games in the

matchup. Kappy made two passes for scores and Leah played very well

at midfield, offering a tremendous lead pass in the third quarter.

Fuller hit Bryn Crowell across the left front of the net for the

first Panther goal, while Libby Knight followed up with another quick

steal and score. Fuller and Crowell teamed up for yet another goal in

the first and the Panthers were roaring.

McKenzie Stephens and Ryan Moncrief played well together on the

offensive and defensive end, while Tara Fuller played solid goalie

making five stops and led a very determined Panther defense. Kira

Wandrocke and Rachel Whitelegge captained the defensive unit that

allowed only one Blue Dolphin goal. Bryn Crowell had three scores for

the game and Libby Knight added four more.

In boys under-8 play:

* Inferno vs. Water Bombs

The Inferno showed strong midfield presence, led by Landon Knight

and Luke Shea. Jonathon Edson kept the Inferno Balls attacking but

the Water Bombs were up to the challenge, denying the Inferno’s

scoring chances.

Blake Jensen, Jack Heald and Zach Granoff each played solid

defense. The defense was anchored by great goalkeeping with David

Hartman in as goal keeper. Camden Daily also played well at goal. Joe

Ahearn contributed to the Inferno’s defensive effort.

Quinton McKay and Griff Clawson were masterful goalies for the

Waterbombs. Alejandro Solis, Parker Young and Jack Binford battled

the awesome Inferno defense to score for the Waterbombs.

Team assists in both offense and defense came from the Water

Bombs’ Ryan Braun, Micah Adelsohn and Slater Anderson. Dominik

Folkner and Collin Rowe lead several charges up the field for the

Bombs.

In boys under-7 play:

* Predators vs. Green Dragons

The Predators had to come back from a goal down after the Green

Dragons scored from a well-struck, low drive early in the first half.

Allowing only its second goal of the season seemed to inspire the

Predators and within minutes they equalized through another fine goal

from their leading goal-scorer Dillon Murphy.

The Predators then applied relentless pressure on the Green

Dragons, with Davis Clement and Shane Mitchell working tirelessly in

mid-field to support their forwards. The break finally came when Alex

Forman brought the ball into the penalty area and deftly slid it past

the advancing keeper. He followed this moments later with his second

goal of the game, and third in two games, when he forced the ball

into the net between two defenders.

* Salty Sea Dawgs

The Salty Sea Dawgs, led by Andrew Laidlaw and Jeremiah Sheldon,

who each scored a goal and played both ends of the field, made

another impressive showing on Saturday. Goalies J.D. Dennis, Jordan

Teisan, as well as Laidlaw and Sheldon made several saves. Jake

Weyrich, Peter Harano, Kingston Mc Carthy, and Jack Rapillo all

played solid defense, with skilled passing and hustle in helping the

team.

In girls under-6 play:

* Pink Dolphins vs. Purple Jaguars

The Pink Dolphins’ Kate Granoff, Marley Mais and Natalie Capellini

were playmakers in the intense action against the Purple Jaguars.

Claire Johnson, Callie Govaars and Charlie Toffel sped downfield for

repeated breakaway runs on the Jaguar goal and Callie Kennedy topped

off the Dolphin action with a fourth quarter goal.

* Flamingos vs. Red Dragons

Julia Ackerman scored first and last on breakaways, one following

a booming defensive kick from Erika Ellis that cleared the heads of

almost all offenders and defenders. McKenzie Porteous put in the

second Flamingo goal, while Madeline Phillips dribbled all the way

down field only to have the ball knocked away just before she planted

it in the goal. It rebounded to teammate Erika Ellis who knocked it

in from fifteen feet out.

Mandy Tapfer scored the fourth goal for the Flamingos. Kate Mc

Allister stayed in the mix, knocking several balls out to teammates,

helping to set up scoring opportunities.

* Fireflies vs. Pink Fireballs

The Fireflies offense came out strong, led by Sianna Siemonsma,

Molly Volkland & Emily Root. Katie Ramm and Allison Hanscom were

unstoppable in their pursuit of a goal, while Jenna Eakin and Katie

O’Hea contributed key kicks and blocks.

In boys under-6 play:

* Dragons Ben Toffel found the pass from Barron Banta and broke

away for a big goal, while Malcolm Davis, in a heads up play, put a

loose ball in for another. Nic Rimlinger blocked a big kick and Chase

Adelsohn, Max Toffel and Dominic Loftus all provided strong defense.

* Green Lizards vs. Tigersharks

The Lizards came out strong with goals by Raymond Haskell and

Colin Avary. The offensive play was matched with amazing defense by

Sam Wertheimer, Jordan Firey and Brady Glenn. Angus Bastone scored

two goals in the second half and Wells Drayton added another as the

Lizards are showing solid teamwork.

* Cheetahs vs. Aliens

The Cheetah defense got things off to a great start, with both

Joshua Jenkins and Chandler Siemonsma making diving saves. Jon and

James Hodges played very tough, thwarting the Alien attack at both

ends of the field.

Jack McClintock hustled downfield to save what seemed to be

several certain Alien breakaway goals. In the second quarter, the

Cheetahs went on the offensive. Ashe Deering really controlled the

ball throughout the game, moving it downfield with ease, passing to

his teammates and taking several shots. McClintock also had numerous

shots on goal, converting two of them to score, while Siemonsma added

one more.

Jenkins and Lucas Hodges also maneuvered themselves into good

position and took a couple of shots that almost rolled in for a

score.

* Asteroids vs. Green Geckos

Christopher Torres had two goals and several attempts that almost

made it in. Tyler Johnston, Justin DeMarzo, Ryan Binford, and Bryce

Edmondson all got into the battle with kicks, passes, or good defense

plays, as well as Sean Liam McCarthy, who also made a good effort to

defend the goal.

* Riding Giants vs. Green Eagles

The Riding Giants improved its passing game in battling the Green

Team. Corbin Joseph led the team with three goals, while Jacob

Duerhing made a goal dribbling down field and shooting from the left

corner.

Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt’s excellent play as rover kept the ball

in Monster territory. Chandler Hunt passed and dribbled the ball well

as well as scoring one goal. Andrew Stoneman added a goal and hustled

up and down the field.

In boys under-5 play:

* Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. The Sharks

With very skilled dribbling and passing, Luc Levine, Chace Duma,

and Brady Scanlan scored numerous goals. The strong defense was led

by Randy Vance, who repeatedly turned back the Shark offense. Dillon

Lippman did a solid job of keeping the ball down at the other end of

the field and scoring goals.

* Green Bulldogs vs. Blue Barracudas

Billy Shannon provided the best assist of the season for the Green

Bulldogs on a goal scored by Ben Zehnder. Joe Skinner also had an

impressive game, scoring two goals using his left foot. Jack Brennan

and Eann McKasson hustled throughout the game.
