Castillo’s four goals ignite Sailors

Freshman Nate Castillo’s four goals helped lead the host Newport

Harbor High boys water polo team to a 13-3 Sea View League victory

over Aliso Niguel Wednesday.

Jovan Vranes contributed both offensively and defensively for the

Sailors (8-6, 1-1 in league) with three goals and five steals.

Clay Jorth tallied two goals while younger brother Clinton Jorth,

Carson Hill, Brett Auer and Telford Cottam all found the back of the

cage once. Clinton Jorth added three assists while Blake Hockenbury

made two steals.

Senior goalkeeper Michael Robinson made seven saves for Newport.

Sea Kings hang on

* WATER POLO: Senior Bryan Buhagiar scored a team-high three goals

as the host Corona del Mar High boys water polo team opened Pacific

Coast League play with a 9-7 victory over Northwood in a matchup of

two teams ranked in the top 10 of CIF Southern Section Division I

Wednesday.

CdM (8-7, 1-0 in league) took an 8-4 lead into the fourth quarter

before Northwood outscored the hosts, 3-1, in the final seven

minutes.

Jacob Murphy scored two goals while teammates Spencer Pirdy, Tom

Money, Thomas Pearson and Tyler Kent each added one goal for the Sea

Kings, who entered play ranked fifth in Division I. Northwood is

ranked ninth.

CdM senior goalkeeper Gaston Sanford made seven saves.

Horn paces Newport

* GOLF: Senior standout Kayleigh Horn of Newport Harbor High shot

4-over-par 40 Wednesday to earn medalist honors as the Sailors’ girls

golf team defeated visiting Woodbridge, 233-254, in a Sea View League

match at Santa Ana Country Club.

Natalie Draganza (43), Ashley Jacobs (47), Katie McKay (51) and

Iko Kagasoff (52) also scored for the Sailors (5-5, 2-3 in league).

Woodbridge fell to 2-3 in league.

Sailors lose on games

* TENNIS: Sophomore Chrissy Schwartz swept while teammate

Brittanny Sturgess claimed two sets, but the Newport Harbor High

girls tennis team narrowly lost to host University on games, 82-80,

in a nonleague match Wednesday.

Freshman Alex McIntosh and Melissa Chinn won two doubles sets

while Sasha Dunlap and Carly Adams claimed one set for Newport (7-6),

which tied University with nine victories following three rounds of

play.

The Sailors return to Sea View League play when they host Laguna

Hills at 3 p.m. today.

Coast snaps streak

* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore Melissa Zapiain slammed 17 kills to go

with nine digs and three blocks as the Orange Coast College women’s

volleyball team snapped a rare two-match losing streak with a 30-15,

22-30, 30-24, 30-28 Orange Empire Conference victory over visiting

Irvine Valley Wednesday.

VU scores fifth shutout

* SOCCER: Matthew Hess and Armando Ortiz each scored single goals

in the second half to help the Vanguard University men’s soccer team

to a 2-0 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over visiting

Concordia Tuesday.

The Lions (11-3, 5-0 in the GSAC) won their eighth straight and

tallied their fifth consecutive shutout, keeping them in a tie for

first place with Azusa Pacific.
