Sunset League battles begin
For the next five weeks, it will be an all out war in the race for
the 2004 Sunset League football championship.
With the nonleague portion of the schedule now a thing of the
past, five schools will battle it out for Sunset supremacy, and it
all begins tonight when Marina travels to face Los Alamitos and
Esperanza hosts Fountain Valley.
On Friday, Edison entertains Huntington Beach and in Golden West
League action, Ocean View visits Estancia.
TONIGHT’S GAME
Marina (0-5) vs. Los Alamitos (4-1)
(at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.)
Marina gets the chance at a fresh start to the second half of the
season when it takes on powerful Los Alamitos, which shared the 2003
league championship with Edison and Fountain Valley.
The Vikings didn’t win a game the first five weeks of the season,
but came close last week in a 27-21 loss to Paramount.
Marina’s five nonleague opponents went a combined 20-5.
Los Alamitos is riding a three-game winning streak since a Sept. 9
loss to top-ranked and undefeated Mission Viejo, and have outscored
those three opponents, 126-14.
In fact, Mission Viejo is a common opponent between the two
schools: Los Al fell to the Diablos, 55-21, and Marina was shutout
out by the Diablos, 50-0, on Sept. 24.
Last year’s score: Los Alamitos 28, Marina 0
FRIDAY’S GAMES
Huntington Beach (4-0-1) vs. Edison (4-1)
(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)
It’s homecoming for Edison, which has had an extra week to prepare
for this important Sunset opener.
Huntington Beach literally is rolling into this game, having
scored an average of 40 points in each of its four victories.
Edison is coming off a bye and hasn’t played since a 20-14 loss to
Mater Dei on Oct. 1.
Last year’s score: Edison 35, Huntington Beach 0

Ocean View (1-4, 0-1) vs. Estancia (2-3, 0-1)
(at Orange Coast College, 7 p.m.)
Both teams are 0-1 in Golden West League play, and neither can
afford another loss if it hopes to stay in playoff contention.
Ocean View was blanked in its league opener last week by
Saddleback, 29-0. The Seahawks’ lone win this year came at the
expense of Century, 10-9.
Ocean View has been shut out the past two weeks and has scored
just 44 points in five games.
Estancia stepped out of league play last week and was defeated by
host Garden Grove, 41-34.
The Eagles are on a two-game losing skid.
Last year’s score: Estancia 35, Ocean View 30
