Edison spikers score key win over Esperanza

The Edison High girls’ volleyball team picked up a key Sunset League

victory and rare win over Esperanza by defeating the visiting Aztecs,

25-16, 14-25, 25-21, 25-21.

Colleen Burke finished with 13 kills, Kari Pestolesi had 12 kills

and Kelly Keating came up with 40 assists as the Chargers ran their

league record to 2-0 and 13-2, overall.

Huntington Beach suffered its first Sunset League loss when Los

Alamitos swept the host Oilers, 25-14, 25-19, 25-19.

Ocean View ran its Golden West League record to a perfect 5-0 with

an easy 25-12, 25-8, 25-6 sweep of visiting Westminster.

Jeniece Womack led the Seahawks with 14 kills and Erica

Congelliere recorded 20 assists.

Ocean View is now 8-1 overall.

In girls’ tennis, Brentwood, the No. 1 team in CIF-Southern

Section Division III, scored an 11-7 nonleague win over visiting

Edison.

Sisters Lauren and Melissa Boyer earned a sweep at No. 1 doubles.

In another nonleague match, Edison fell to host Laguna Beach,

12-6. The Chargers played the match without the services of No. 1

singles player, Brittany Bass, and No. 2 singles player, Vali Bonev.

Edison was a 15-3 winner over Esperanza in Sunset League play.

Bass and Bonev swept at top two singles, the Boyer sisters swept at

No. 1 doubles and Vi Truong and Lauren Okine swept at No. 2 doubles.

Huntington fell in Sunset League play to Los Alamitos, 10-8 -- the

Oilers’ first loss of the year.

Huntington previously routed league rival Marina, 17-1, and downed San Clemente in a nonleague match, 12-6.

In the win over San Clemente, earning sweeps for the Oilers were

Jennifer Heumann at No. 2 singles, Monica Stupaczuk by 6-0 scores at

No. 3 singles, sisters Amy and Stacy Kaufman at No. 1 doubles, Elaine

Nguyen and Kelly Wong at No. 2 doubles and Jenny Le and Christina Le

at No. 3 doubles.

In girls’ golf, Esperanza handed visiting Marina its first Sunset

League loss, 210-220, at Black Gold Golf Course in Yorba Linda.

Marina’s Jennifer Osborn took medalist honors with a 2-under 34.

At David L. Baker Golf Course, Huntington overcame Fountain

Valley, 213-217, in another Sunset match.

In boys’ water polo, Marina toppled Fountain Valley, 12-5,

Huntington fell to Los Alamitos, 13-2 and Edison was defeated by

Esperanza, 13-7, in a tripleheader at the Joint Forces Training Base

in Los Alamitos.
