Yokoyama sparks Sailors over Vaqs
Sophomore Coco Yokoyama led the Newport Harbor High girls volleyball
team with 11 kills in its win over Irvine in four games, 25-23,
22-25, 25-20, 25-18, Tuesday in a Sea View League match at Irvine.
Senior Kiley Hall also had 11 kills, while senior Taryn Tarnutzer
totaled eight kills. In the second game -- the one loss -- the
Sailors (6-6, 3-0 in league) were up for the majority of the time,
but went down in the end after too many unforced errors.
Corona del Mar wins in four
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team
defeated Calvary Chapel in four games, 25-10, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-12
Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League match.
Jordan Smith led the Sea Kings with eight kills, while Lindsey
Ensign had 15 digs and five aces, to go along with the team’s 13
total service aces.
Traci Lawson added 19 assists and Britta Nielson added three kills
as Corona improved its league record to 3-0.
Mustangs control Seahawks
* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team scored on
nearly every possession in Tuesday’s, 29-2, Golden West League
victory over visiting Ocean View.
Adam Douglas led all scores with 12 goals and Kyle Thorsness
tallied eight for the Mustangs (10-3, 4-0 in league). It didn’t take
Mesa long to make it a blowout, scoring four goals in the first two
minutes of play. Ocean View (3-6) was down 5-0 before it got on the
scoreboard.
The Mustangs hosts Los Amigos Thursday.
Lightning runners defeated
* CROSS COUNTRY: The boys and girls cross country team for Sage
Hill School both lost Tuesday to Oxford in an Academy League match at
El Dorado Park in Long Beach.
Despite both medalists being from Sage -- Zach Chandy (17:10) and
Katie McKeon (20:18) -- the boys (5-1, 4-4 in league) lost, 23-24,
while the girls (3-3, 2-3 in league) lost, 26-29.
Other top finishers for the Lightning boys were Tim Lefler (fifth
overall), Connor Rose (eighth), David Packard (ninth) and Nick Gross
(12th).
Top finishers for the girls were Mollie McGann (fourth overall),
Erica Faris (fifth), Rachel Blitzer (ninth) and Sara Becker (10th).
UCI finishes seventh at Saticoy
* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished seventh in the Club
Glove Intercollegiate tournament Tuesday at Saticoy Country Club in
Somis, Calif.
Host Pepperdine won the 12-team tournament with a three-round
total of even-par 864. Coastal Carolina was second at 871, while SMU
and Arizona State tied for third at 876. UCI’s 54-hole total was 883.
Colt Knost of SMU captured medalist honors with a 4-under total of
212. Anteater junior Jay Choe finished second at 2-under 214 and
freshman Garrett Sapp was 23rd at 221. Sophomore Brian Edick and
freshman Kenny Kim tied for 37th place at 226 and junior Ryne
Rindfleisch finished 51st at 232.
The Anteaters return to action at The Prestige in Palm Desert Nov.
1-2.
Sage Hill seizes third place
* WATER POLO: The Sage Hill School boys water polo team finished
third at the Estancia tournament completed Saturday.
The Lightning defeated Mater Dei, 5-4, in the third-place game, as
John Neff scored three goals to pace the winners.
Sage Hill defeated Pacifica, 10-0, earlier Saturday after toppong
Estancia, 11-7, Friday.
Four different players scored for the Lightning against Pacifica,
while Julian Tooma led five Sage scorers with five goals against
Estancia.
Danny Harold made seven saves to preserve the shutout against
Pacifica.

Vanguard wins 20th match
* VOLLEYBALL: Jaclyn Lee, Kim Wynn and Sonrisa Peace each had 12
kills for the Vanguard women’s volleyball team as the visiting Lions
defeated Point Loma, 30-19, 26-30, 30-20, 30-25, in Golden State
Athletic Conference action Tuesday. VU improved to 20-7, 7-4 in the
GSAC.
Concordia takes care of VU
* SOCCER: Sabrina Strake of Concordia University booted in a
rebound shot after a save by Vanguard goalie Lauren Walker in the
48th minute as the Eagles edged the host Lions, 1-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match.
Concordia (5-5-1, 4-0 in the GSAC) outshot VU (6-5-2, 1-3-1) in
the opening 45 minutes, 8-1, before Strake notched the game-winner at
the 3:31 mark in the second half.
