Lightning still perfect
The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team improved its league record
to 2-0 Friday, defeating Capistrano Valley Christian, 25-11, 25-11,
25-14, in an Academy League match at Capo Valley Christian High.
Cat Daily led the Lightning (8-4, 2-0 in league) with eight kills
and two blocks, and sophomore center Kelsey Lawler had a match-high
20 assists to set up Sage’s win.
Sage’s serving was on fire with the team dishing out 14 total
aces, seven coming from co-captain Vista Murphy.
Sage plays St. Margaret’s Tuesday in its biggest league match of
the year. St. Margaret’s defeated Sage twice in league last season.
Vanguard sets record
* VOLLEYBALL: The host Vanguard University women’s volleyball team
set a school record for victories in a season after defeating
visiting Westmont, 26-30, 32-30, 30-25, 30-22, in Golden State
Athletic Conference play Friday night.
The Lions (19-7, 6-4 in the GSAC) were paced by Sonrisa Peace (18
kills), Jaclyn Lee (14) and Keri Dehaas (10). They travel to Point
Loma Tuesday.
Eagles win in overtime
* WATER POLO: Chad Kunert scored in overtime to give the Estancia
High boys water polo team a 10-9 victory over La Quinta in the
Estancia tournament Friday at Estancia.
Estancia won that game, but lost its first game, 11-7, against
Sage Hill School.
Kunert led in the victory game with five goals, while Danny
Alderete had three. Alderete and Kunert both had three in the loss to
Sage.

UC Irvine sweeps Davis
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine’s women’s volleyball team swept UC Davis
in three games, 30-25, 30-12, 30-22, to improve its overall record to
12-4 Friday in nonconference action at UCI.
Kelly Wing racked up 14 kills for the Anteaters, while Sami Cash
had 12 as the Anteaters as a team combined for 51 total kills in the
win.
Sage breezes to win
* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School girls tennis team obliterated
Whitney, 17-1, in an Academy League matchup Friday at Whitney High.
No. 1 singles player Stephanie Langer and No. 3 singles player
Alyssa Lee both swept their sets, while No. 2 singles player Sarah
Geocaris won two out of three.
The entire doubles team, consisting of Sarah Flynn, Alle Hsu,
Carissa Cummings, Salen Andrews, Brina Dokich and Rachel Heyler all
swept their sets.
The Lightning (6-4, 4-1 in league) will host St. Margaret’s in
another Academy League match on Tuesday.

Mesa bites into Orange
* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team devoured
Orange in three games, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-21, Friday afternoon at
Costa Mesa High.
Lindsey Navarrette lead the Mustangs with nine kills, while
Danielle Morton had six kills and three blocks.
Jackie Havens added four aces and 17 assists.
OCC men win, 2-1
* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team defeated
Golden West, 2-1, Friday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference
game at Golden West.
Golden West’s Steve Armendariz scored in the 11th minute to put
the Rustlers up, 1-0. But OCC shot back in the 35th minute with a
header by Jose Serpas off a corner kick from Will Sanchez.
Matt Schirmer scored in the 74th minute to seal the victory for
the Pirates.
Eight enough for OCC
* SOCCER: Orange Coast College’s women’s soccer team scored a
season-high eight goals, each from a different player, in an 8-0
shutout over visiting Golden West in Orange Empire Conference action.
OCC goalies Kara DeMille, Michelle Vahdatipour and Maria DeMesa
shared time in the net, but none were forced to make a save in the
win.
Orange Coast (8-2-1, 6-2-0 in the OEC) travels to Saddleback at 3
p.m. Tuesday.
Golden West fell to 0-7-3, 0-7-1.
Corona del Mar splits
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar defeated Coronado in the first round
of the S and R Sport Water Polo Cup, but lost to Long Beach Wilson in
the second round, Friday at the Irvine William Woollett Jr. Aquatics
Complex.
Tom Money and Jacob Murphy had four goals apiece to lead the Sea
Kings against Coronado in the 16-11 win, and Thomas Pearson had three
goals in CdM’s 15-5 loss to Long Beach.
Sea Kings’ goalie Gaston Sanford combined in both games for 21
saves.

Mesa tests Tustin
* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team could not
close the game in the fourth quarter, and lost 13-9 to Tustin
Thursday in a nonleague game at Tustin High.
Up by one point entering the fourth quarter, the Mustangs (9-3,
3-0 in league) couldn’t stop Tustin’s constant barrage of shots and
also could not counter in goals, scoring none in the final period.
Kyle Thorsness led Mustang scoring with four goals, while Luke
Yellin added two.
Matt Jaroslawski had seven saves for Mesa.

UCI falls to Matadors
* SOCCER: The host UC Irvine women’s soccer team lost, 2-0, to Cal
State Northridge in a Big West Conference game.
Freshman Tryna Tafoya put the Matadors (9-2-1, 3-0 in conference)
up, 1-0, at the 10:32 mark off an assist from Brianna Monka. Casey
Dodd added a goal off an assist by Rebecca Hidalgo at the 37:15 mark
to give Northridge a 2-0 lead at the half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Welliver had six saves for the
‘Eaters.
UCI (3-8-2, 0-3) will host Pacific at noon Sunday.
Orange Coast swept
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team
lost, 30-22, 32-30, 30-17, to visiting Riverside in an Orange Empire
match.
The Pirates (5-3, 1-2 in league) had a chance to even the match in
the second game, but a hitting error and a Riverside kill put the
game away. Donka Drozd and Melissa Zapian each had 10 kills to lead the Bucs.
The Tigers (3-3, 2-1) took advantage of poor OCC defense,
registering 45 kills and 13 service aces.
OCC hosts Irvine Valley Wed. in another Orange Empire match.
Hawkins leaves Crush
* BASKETBALL: Juaquin Hawkins, the first player signed by the
Orange County Crush, an American Basketball Association expansion
franchise scheduled to play at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds. signed
earlier this week with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Crush announced
Thursday.
Hawkins, a 6-foot-7 forward, played 58 games with the Houston
Rockets in the 2002-03 season, averaging 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds.
He played the 2003-04 campaign with the Long Beach Jam, earning
ABA Defensive Player of the Year recognition under the guidance of
Jam Coach Earl Cureton, who is now the coach of the Crush.
Hawkins, 31, is among 19 players listed on the roster for the
Bucks, who open their eight-game preseason schedule Wednesday at home
against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
