UCI calls for volunteers to help with research
A UC Irvine research center is seeking women with abnormal Pap
smear results to be screened for the human papillomavirus and
possibly receive treatment with a new vaccine.
The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is conducting the
study. The virus is a primary cause of the cell changes that lead to
cervical cancer and is a common viral infection passed between sex
partners.
The vaccine is designed to treat the infection and stop cells from
becoming cancerous.
High-risk forms of the virus are found in about 80% of women with
abnormal Pap smears, the center reported. Of those, about 1% turn
cancerous.
The study, also being conducted at UCLA, is looking for
pre-menopausal women between the ages of 18 and 50 who have had an
abnormal Pap smear during the past year.
For more information, call Patricia Tully at UCI at (888) 456-7067
or UCLA’s Dorothy Wiley at (800) 233-7231.
Online jobs list a boon for college employment
A new website will make it easier for job seekers to find jobs
within the state’s higher education system.
The Southern California Higher Education Recruitment Consortium is
sponsoring the first higher education employment website in the
region. It gives people access to information about faculty and staff
position at 23 public and private colleges and universities in
Southern California.
About 1,500 jobs are listed on the site, according to UCI
officials. Colleges and universities in Southern California expect to
hire more than 50,000 new employees in the next five years, according
to UCI.
Fundraiser to raise scholarship money
A benefit will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 for the Brandon Cody
Wiener Scholarship Fund at the Costa Mesa Senior Center. The
scholarship fund was established in memory of Brandon Wiener, who was
3 years old when he was killed by Steven Abrams. Abrams drove his car
through a Costa Mesa preschool playground on May 3, 1999.
Four-year-old Sierra Soto also died in that incident.
Money raised from the event will go toward sending children who
have suffered the loss of a loved one to camp. There will be a dinner
and silent auction. Tickets cost $40 per person. A table of eight can
be purchased for $275. Fore reservations or for more information,
call (949) 645-0944 or visit https://bcwfund.fateback.com.
