Relevant starters
Two former Mr. Irrelevant honorees are starting for their respective
NFL teams.
Fullback Jim Finn and strong safety Mike Green are listed at the
top of the depth charts for the New York Giants and Chicago Bears,
respectively, both having played in their squads’ first four games
this season.
Green, a 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back in his fifth NFL season,
ranks as Chicago’s third-leading tackler the past three seasons with
254 in 42 games, including 26 starts at strong safety. He has made 23
solo tackles this season while adding two interceptions and four pass
deflections.
The Bears drafted him with the 254th and final pick in the 2000
NFL draft out of Northwestern State (La.), where he earned
All-America and All-Southland Conference honors as a junior and
senior.
Finn, a 6-foot, 245-pound fullback also in his fifth NFL season,
has four receptions for 25 yards this fall for the Giants (3-1). He
has 28 receptions for 184 yards and one touchdown in 62 career games
with the Indianapolis Colts and Giants.
The Bears drafted Finn, who ranks fourth on the University of
Pennsylvania’s all-time rushing list with 2,277 yards, with the 253rd
and final pick of the 1999 NFL draft.
Newport Beach businessman and former NFL player Paul Salata
founded Irrelevant Week 29 years ago, meant to honor the final pick
in the NFL draft with a week of dinners, awards ceremonies and other
festivities each June.
