Appell tops men’s field

Estancia High product Johann Appell, 27, won the men’s division of

the 13th annual Koman Orange County Race for the Cure 5K Sunday in

Newport Beach.

Appell, a Huntington Beach resident who competed collegiately at

Orange Coast and Long Beach State, clocked a time of 15 minutes, 41

seconds, 16 seconds ahead of Ben Majia of Santa Ana. Appell defended

his 2003 title at the event, organized to support the Susan G. Koman

Breast Cancer Foundation.

Costa Mesa resident Dave Parsel, a product of Estancia High and

Orange Coast College, was fifth in the men’s overall standings. The

former 1987 community college state champion in the 10,000 meters,

now 49, finished in 16:46.

Cassandra Henkiel, 34, from Austin, Texas, won the women’s race in

17:41, one second ahead of 23-year-old Irvine resident Brooke Thomas.

Ericka Aklufi (17:56), Tania Fisher from Santa Monica (18:05) and

Lin Schulte-Sasse from Los Angeles (18:14) rounded out the women’s

top five.

Danny Reed of Laguna Niguel was third in the men’s race (16:16),

followed by Geesh Jenkins from San Clemente (16:36).

McKeon sets record

* CROSS COUNTRY: Sage Hill School freshman Katie McKeon finished

third in the frosh-soph girls Division III race Saturday at the Dana

Hills cross country invitational.

Katie McKeon’s time of 19 minutes, 30 seconds broke her own school

record.

Connor Rose finished fourth in the boys freshmen division in

17:16, while Sage Hill teammate Zach Chandy (17:24) was 19th in the

junior boys race.

The Lightning run Tuesday against Academy League opponent Whitney.

Cothran Lion of Week

* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University junior Marissa Cothran, the

setter on the Lions’ women’s volleyball team, garnered several honors

last week.

The Newport Harbor High product was named Lion of the Week by the

school’s athletic department. She was also recognized as the Golden

State Athletic Conference Setter of the Week, as well as NAIA Region

II Setter of the Week after leading VU to five wins in six matches

through Sept. 18.

Cothran had 33 assists in a conference loss at Concordia Sept. 14,

then posted a then-season-high 57 assists in a five-game win over

Hope International Sept. 16. She also had seven kills and nine digs

against Hope.

She helped VU win four straight matches Sept. 17-18 at the Pacific

Coast Classic in Claremont, amassing 129 assists, 30 digs, seven aces

and 14 kills in the four triumphs.
