Seahawks soar on road past Generals

Michael Helfrich caught two touchdown passes to spark the

Newport-Mesa Junior Midget Seahawks’ 35-0 victory over the Woodcrest

Generals in a Junior All-American football game Sept. 18.

The Seahawks, who earned their first road victory this season,

recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff and tailback back

Danny Miller ran in for the team’s first score.

In the second quarter, quarterback Mitch Sands delivered a 30-yard

touchdown pass to tight end Andrew Yelich.

The Seahawks were not done, scoring again as the half expired.

Sands handed off to running back Coby Peterson, who then threw a

40-yard TD toss to Helfrich, giving the Seahawks a 21-0 lead.

The Seahawks offensive line of Ron Sadler, William Ham, Sean

Breslin, and Kyle Cablay and Nicholas Svendsen keyed the drives.

Cathan Cokas pressure the Generals’ quarterback in the second half

while Vincint Galvez prevented inside runs.

Grant Keligian, Matthew Morris, Alex Swigert, Sean Mangano, Andrew

Hicks, Dutch Lamons Robert Conneally and Michael McKay aided to the

staunch defense.

Brandon Kula’s 3-yard TD run, with strong blocking from Taylor

McSunas, and Helfrich’s second 40-yard TD reception, capped the

Seahawks’ scoring.

In Pee Wee play:

* Carson 37, Seahawks 0:

The Colts scored on their opening possession of the game to take a

6-0 lead. Brett Linkletter blocked the extra-point attempt while

linemen Steven Sheldon, Bradan Granard, Taylor Wheeler and D.J.

Hauser applied pressure.

The Seahawks played the game with offensive linemen Grant Frazier,

John Prickett, Hauser, Austin Turner, Luis Sheldon, Jimmy Reed and

Spencer Haly.

Nico Napolitano and Steven Sheldon anchored the line as tight

ends. The Seahawks moved the ball on the ground behind strong

blocking and running from fullback Blake Burkhart and tailback J.D.

Abbott.

Quarterback Travis Woloson connected with Drew Diller for a

15-yard completion and a first down on third-and-7. Strong running

moved the ball to the Colts 28-yard line before two penalties and a

fumble stifled the Seahawks longest drive of the game.

The Seahawks defense played well the entire game against a strong

Colts’ offense. Safeties Chris Brown, Macklin Weinstein, Aaron Rentz

and John Barnett patrolled the secondary.

Linebackers Ryan Iverson and Brett Klein provided strong run

defnense with help up front from Hunter Durrante, Keegan Jakowski and

Liam Duddy.

The Colts returned a punt for a touchdown in the second half and

had a long TD run.

In Jr. Clinic (7- and 8-year-old) play:

* Carson 14, Seahawks 7:

Seahawk defensive linemen Trevor Branca, Colin Duffy, Jamal Bazzi

and Jeremiah Barwick tackled Carson ballcarriers throughout the

contest.

The Seahawks moved the ball in the second quarter on runs of 9, 10

and 12 yards by tailbacks Nic Landstrom and Clay Woodward while

quarterback Quest Truxton led the drives.

Running backs Beau Roth and Chad Sheldon, behind the offensive

line of Austin Robert, Matt McKinnon, Alex Fuller and Cole Collins,

provided offensive sparks in the second half.

The Colts tried throwing the ball in the fourth quarter, but

Truxton intercepted one pass while linebackers Noah Howe and Will

Eary helped quell the Colts’ attack.

Clint Henderson led the Seahawks with seven tackles.

In Silver Jr. Clinic play:

* Garden Grove 14, Seahawks 7:

Quarterback Chase Forrest hit Tanner Traglia for a 25-yard

touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, highlighting a 75-yard drive

for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks’ tried an onside kick, but Garden Grove recovered and

ran out the clock.

Newport-Mesa was led by strong defense from Spencer Lujan, Andrew

Shearer, Charlie Padden, Lukas Nienhuis, Marshall Sepulveda and Tim

McGetrick.

Tate Smith and Taylor Antenucci added key returns for the Seahawks

while the offensive line was anchored by Max Carr, Austin Arico,

Quentin Moses, Dane Valdivia and Smith. The line opened holes for

tailbacks Jake Favreau, Sage Fleming, Stephen Cureton, Forrest and

Traglia.

In Jr. Pee Wee play:

* Baldwin Hills 33, Seahawks 13:

The Bruins set the tone for the game by taking the opening kickoff

for a touchdown.

The Seahawks answered on their first offensive possession with

quarterback Blair Luchs leading an 8-play drive, resulting in John

Barton’s 1-yard TD plunge.

The Seahawk offensive line of A,J. Swies, Mario Rosales, Ben Paul,

Trent Anderson, Vince Aqueveque and Zach Beaudin paved the way for

backs Sam Barkely, Barton, Jeff Condino and Blair Luchs.

Barkley had an interception and some key tackles while Swies,

Chasen McNaughten and Tyler Barbato aided the defense.

In Future Seahawks play:

* Newport-Mesa 20, Corona 0:

The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead on their first drive with

a long run by Colin Brandenberger and cruised to their first victory.

Anthony Battista added another strong run early.

Nick Sperr, Colton Benter, Jack Genova, Will Favreau and Jake

Genova stifled the Panthers’ offense.

Newport-Mesa quarterback Kobe Benter led sustained drives with

help from linemen Phoenix Smith, Jordan Brokaw, Luke Genova, Max

Durante and Michael Brown.
