Habitat homes draw favor, ire
No. Habitat for Humanity, however well-intentioned a business
corporation, is marginalizing, isolating, stigmatizing and
ghettoizing the people who will be placed in the eight homes behind a
14-foot wall. I am completely opposed to this.
I was opposed to my own home being placed behind the loading dock
of a regional warehouse. In good conscience, I cannot avoid speaking
up to help those people who may be in the same boat.

I called to support the project of Habitat for Humanity. I’ve
personally been involved with Habitat for over 20 years. Members of
my church are financially supportive. We have also helped build homes
and served on important committees of Habitat for Humanity.
One of the things that I always appreciate about Habitat is the
wonderful relationship that the people who are going to be moving
into the homes have with each other as they work together to build
their homes and work with volunteers. And I also really appreciate it
because I have watched the homes over the years, and they have all
been kept up really well, and I think that’s also very important for
the project.
So, I do hope this will be worked out with the neighbors and hope
things can be worked out to the satisfaction of everyone.
