Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team took eight of nine singles
sets to roll to a 14-4 nonleague victory over host Woodbridge
Tuesday.
Sophomore Jillian Braverman didn’t lose a game in sweeping her
three singles sets while Hayley Young and Jill Damion each took two
sets. Damion was down to Ashley Williams, Woodbridge’s top singles
player, 4-1 before rallying for a 7-5 victory.
Freshman Allie Walters and partner Rachael Miller won two doubles
sets for CdM (2-0), which faces another stiff test in host Peninsula
at 2 p.m. today.

Mesa starts off winning
* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team got off to
a stellar start to the season with a road sweep of Santa Ana Valley
Tuesday.
The Mustangs won 25-10, 25-12, 25-22 thanks to four-year varsity
setter Jackie Havens, who had 25 assists in the match. Danielle
Morton, a sophomore playing in her varsity match, recorded seven
kills for Mesa. Lindsey Navarrette finished with nine aces and five
kills, and Tracy Bjelland had five kills and six aces on the night.
Costa Mesa will travel to Bolsa Grande Thursday.
Eagles win easily
* GOLF: Sophomore Bridget Gleason shot a 46 to lead the Estancia
High girls golf team to a 254-286 Golden West League victory over
host Ocean View at the par-36 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington
Beach Tuesday.
Sophomore Lina You shot 47 followed by freshman Taylor West (48),
sophomore Josie Flores (53) and junior Lauren Cushing (60) for the
Eagles, (1-1, 1-0 in league).
Sailors dominate again
* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis team dominated in its
17-1 nonleague blowout win over host Sunny Hills on Tuesday.
Junior Brittanny Sturgess did not lose a game in No. 2 singles to
keep the Sailors (2-0) undefeated. The Tars beat Costa Mesa, 17-1,
last week.
Newport Harbor hosts Tesoro on Thursday.

Sage breezes past Vaqs
TENNIS: Sage Hill School rebounded from last week’s close loss to
Laguna Beach with an impressive 13-5 home victory over Rancho
Alamitos in a nonleague match Tuesday.
Sophomore Sarah Geocaris was perfect in her No. 1 singles sets to
lead the Lightning to the win over the Vaqueros (2-1). Sage Hill
travels to El Toro Friday.

Strong meet for Sage
* CROSS COUNTRY: The Sage Hill School’s boys and girls cross
country teams each opened up their dual-meet seasons with victories
over nonleague foe J. Serra Tuesday at Mason Park in Irvine.
Freshman Katie McKeon took first place in 20:59 in leading the
Lightning girls to a 21-36 victory on the three-mile course. Mollie
McGann came in second (21:59), followed by Iral Brito (fifth, 25:18),
Kelsey Rose (sixth, 25:53) and Sara Montezami (seventh, 26:21).
Montezami and Brito each ran personal bests.
Sage Hill senior Mike Voge took first on the boys side in 17:45
followed in second by freshman Connor Rose (17:55), who set a
personal best. Sage took the top four spots with Zach Chandy (third,
18:01) and Tim Lefler (fourth, 18:38), followed by teammate David
Packard, (seventh, 20:32).
Sea Kings lose on road
* VOLLEYBALL: Corona del Mar High senior middle blocker Lindsey
Ensign contributed 16 kills, 11 digs and three blocks and senior
outside hitter Jordan Smith had 14 kills and 12 digs, but the host
San Clemente girls volleyball team defeated the Sea Kings Tuesday
night, 26-24, 18-25, 25-15, 25-22.
Setter Traci Lawson also paced the Sea Kings (1-1) with 19 assists
and three service aces. It was San Clemente’s season opener. The Sea
Kings play Friday in the Dave Mohs tournament at Edison.
UCI takes fourth
* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished fourth in the
Northwest Collegiate Classic that concluded Tuesday at Trysting Tree
Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.
Freshman Garrett Sapp shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to
tie for fourth place in the season opener for the Anteaters. Junior
Jay Choe tied for the lowest round Tuesday, shooting a 4-under 68, to
finish eighth overall in the three-day tournament.
