title to help the Lions earn the team championship at the Cal
Lutheran cross country invitational Saturday in Thousand Oaks.

seconds, was joined by two teammates in the top five.
Senior Jenny Thune finished fourth and Estancia High product Liz
Huipe was fifth, though their times were not available.
Freshman Laura Bowman was 11th and senior Bridget Lonsdale was
19th to help Vanguard top the 10-school field with 40 points.
Westmont was second with 68 points and Occidental was third.

of computer failure, but junior Matt Meyer paced VU with a
fourth-place overall finish in 28:10.

(19th), sophomore Alex Castro (24th), senior John Nelson (46th) and

Sailors finish fifth
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team
dropped its final two matches late Saturday night to finish fifth at
the Northwest invitational at Walla Walla High in Washington.
The Sailors were defeated by Kamiakim (Wash.), 13-25, 26-24,
16-14, despite leading in the second and third games of the
fifth-place match.
Newport fell to Mead (Wash.), the reigning state Class 4-A
champion, 25-20, 25-19, in the championship semifinal match, to fall
into an unusual loser’s bracket format, rather than the traditional
third-place match that typically awaits tournament semifinal losers.
The Sailors (2-1) were led in the tournament by senior outside
hitter Kiley Hall, who was named to the all-tournament team, as well
as senior setter Taryn Tarnutzer.
The Sailors defeated Coeur d’Alene (Idaho), 25-22, 25-13, in the
quarterfinals Saturday, after sweeping all four opponents in their
pool.
In pool play, which featured single-game matches Saturday, Newport
Harbor defeated Redmond (Wash.), 30-21, Richland (Wash.), 30-10, Lake
City (Idaho), 30-20, and Pendleton (Ore.), 30-24.
Mead went on to win the tournament.

* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University senior middle blocker Sonrisa
Peace, named all-tournament in both tournaments she has played this
fall, has been named Lion of the Week by the school.
The 5-foot-11 standout helped Vanguard go 3-1 at the Cal State
Monterey Bay tournament, Aug. 27-28.
She then helped the Lions win two of three in the Concordia
tournament completed Sept. 4.
Peace had a team-high 14 kills in a five-game match against
Carroll College Sept. 3. Later the same day, she led the team with
nine kills in the three-game sweep of Daemen College of New York.

in Vanguard’s sweep over Holy Names University.
