Resolution adopted to oppose consolidation
Coast Community College District Trustees on Wednesday adopted a
resolution opposing the proposed consolidation of the California
Community College Chancellor’s Office into a Division of Higher
Education reporting to the Secretary of Education.
The proposed consolidation was recommended in the California
Performance Review to help lower operating costs of state agencies.
If adopted, it would combine the office with the California
Postsecondary Education Commission, California Student Aid Commission
and Bureau for Private and Postsecondary Vocational Education under
Secretary of Education Richard Riordan.
Such a change would “drastically impact the governance structure
of community college districts around the state” and could
potentially have an “adverse impact” on Coast Community College
District, the agenda item read.
“The elimination of the Board of Governors and consolidation of
the Chancellor’s Office into a Division of Higher Education within
the bureaucracy of the executive branch of state government would
inevitably diminish the standing of the California Community Colleges
as a system of higher education in California,” the resolution
stated.
