The Op Newport Classic surf event, featuring top pros from the
Association of Surfing Professionals, a city championship, an aerial
competition and a clinic for women and girls, is scheduled Sept. 23
through 26 at the 56th Street jetty in Newport Beach.
The event’s men’s and women’s pro-am contests will feature a
72-competitor field, doing battle in a progressive format with heats
beginning Sept. 24.
A field of 48 aerial surfers will seek to win some of a $5,000
prize purse in the OP Surfing Magazine air show, which starts Sept.
23.
Additionally, the 16th annual Newport Beach surf championships, an
amateur contest that will offer divisions including elementary,
middle school, high school, college, masters, men’s and girls, will
be a part of the event.
An invite-only twin-fin battle, featuring a variety of surf
legends past and present competing atop a variety of surfboards, will
also be held immediately before the air show finals Sept. 26.
The clinic for females will be offered Sept. 25 and interested
