Abuse survivors protest Leisure World residents
A group of abuse survivors gathered outside of Leisure World in
Seal Beach on Thursday to let residents know that two of their
neighbors, including a former pastor at a Costa Mesa church, have
faced sexual-abuse charges.
Denis Lyons, 70, former pastor at St. John the Baptist Catholic
Church, and 63-year-old Michael Wempe, a former Catholic priest in
Los Angeles, live in the retirement community according to members of
the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Though neither has
been convicted of a crime, members of the group wanted to notify
residents -- some who have grandchildren visit the complex -- to know
about the accusations.
* Police patrolling the Buck Gully area on Tuesday in a helicopter
spotted about 50 marijuana plants growing there.
Within hours, officers had pulled out the plants, bundled them in
a net and lifted them out of the steep, rugged terrain by helicopter.
Some of the plants were as tall as 7 or 8 feet and had been
harvested, police said. No one is in custody in connection with the
farm.
