Greg Bergeron has been hired as an assistant baseball coach at UC
Irvine, Anteaters coach Dave Dave Serrano announced.
Bergeron comes to UC Irvine after spending seven years as a coach
at El Camino College. He was as an assistant coach from 1997-2002,
served as the associate head coach from 2002-03, and became the head
coach in 2003-04, leading El Camino College to a 30-7 record, the
program’s best mark in school history. Bergeron guided his team to
the semifinals of the state championship, the deepest any El Camino
team had ever gone in playoffs.
“Greg brings a wealth of baseball knowledge with him from El
Camino, where he served both as an assistant and a head coach,”
Serrano said. “We’re very excited to have Greg as an addition to our
baseball program.”
Prior to El Camino College, Bergeron was as an assistant coach at
Cypress College in 1997, helping the team to a state title, and spent
the 1996 season at Loyola Marymount.
Bergeron played at Cerritos College under Serrano and received
first-team All-South Coast Conference honors. As a junior he played
at Cal State Dominguez Hills where he was named Student-Athlete of
the Year, the team’s Most Valuable Player and won the conference
batting title. Bergeron’s senior year was spent at Loyola Marymount,
where he was an All-West Coast Conference honoree. In 1995 he signed
as a free agent with the Houston Astros.
Bergeron earned a degree in physical education from Cal State
Dominguez Hills in 1993 and received his master’s in physical
education from Azusa Pacific in 1997.
