Vanguard signs six players

Four months after setting a school record for wins in a single
season, the Vanguard University women’s basketball team is moving to
the future with the announcement of six new players.
The big catch for Russ Davis, the 2004 Golden State Athletic
Conference Coach of the Year for the Lions, is 6-foot-4 center Andrea
Jacobson, a transfer from the University of San Diego and a former
Brea Olinda High star. She saw limited action as a freshman last year
for the Toreros and will have three years of eligibility after
transferring to Vanguard.
Davis has also landed two players from Arizona: Whitney Hanenburg
and Lindsey Rinke.
Hanenburg, a 5-8 guard/forward from Valley Christian High, where
she was a three-sport athlete, was a two-time all-state prep
performer.
Rinke rejoins former high school teammate Kelly Schmidt, VU’s
second-team All-American freshman last year, on the Vanguard squad. A
two-sport Ironwood High athlete, Rinke is a 5-10 forward with
double-figure averages in scoring and rebounding and two all-region
laurels in her high school career. Tyler Martinook, Melissa Cook, and
Jazmin Ingram, all incoming freshmen, complete the list of six
newcomers. The Lions, 31-3 while advancing to the Elite Eight at the
NAIA tournament last season, will be shooting for their third
straight GSAC title. The Lions open their season at the University of
Washington on Nov. 8, and open at home two days later with the annual
Blue/Gold game.
