No Square to present ‘Babes in Arms’
Bree Burgess Rosen will direct the Rodgers and Hart musical “Babes
in Arms,” which will be performed today through Sunday.
The musical score includes “I Wish I Were in Love Again,” “Where
or When,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Lady is a Tramp” and others.
Valentine White will be played by No Square’s 2004 scholarship
winner, Christian Mariner. Alex Murrel and Jesse Fair play the
love/hate duo Terry and Gus. Ken Jillson, the creator, writer and
star of “Splash,” is playing the “hack southern playwright,” and will
be making his No Square debut.
Also starring are members of the youth theater program of No
Square -- the “Square Roots.” Adam Hemming co-directs and is the
musical director, and Vanessa Schneller is the choreographer.
“Babes in Arms” will be performed at the Artists’ Theatre at 625
Park Ave. Show time is at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m.
Sunday. Tickets are $18 for adults, and seniors and children are $12.

Shanti OC benefit to be held Saturday
The third annual benefit to help Shanti OC, formerly Laguna
Shanti, “Hunks in Trunks and Babes in Bikinis” will be held at Laguna
Art Museum at 7 p.m. Saturday.
This year will feature the new babes in bikinis portion, which
will hopefully appeal to a larger audience. It will include a fashion
show of scantily clad swimwear models, cuisine, cocktails, a DJ and a
live auction with items including many trip packages to destinations
around the world.
The funds go to the Shanti, which is dedicated to improving the
quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS.

College seeking alumni work
Laguna College of Art and Design is launching its academic year
with an exhibition of original artwork by artists and designers who
received their bachelor’s degrees from the college. The annual
“Juried Alumni Exhibition,” is open and will run through Sept. 11.
Alumni of Laguna College are asked to submit work, which is then
juried collectively.
The exhibit reflects the major fields of art and design taught at
the college, including drawing and painting, illustration, graphic
design, animation and sculpture.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Laguna College is at

Music in the Park to be held Sunday
Sunday is the fourth concert of the nine-week season of Music in
the Park.
“Mojo Filter Blues” is serving up blues for this week’s show.
Latin-rock music by “Savor” will be on Aug. 15, and reggae by “Lion
Heart” will be featured Aug. 22.
The concerts are free and run from 5 to 7 p.m. Bring blankets,
beverages and a picnic basket. The concerts are at Bluebird Park at
the corner of Bluebird Drive and Cress Street. No pets are allowed.

Youth theater to perform ‘Woods’
Gallimaufry Performing Arts’ Laguna Beach, which are made up of
performers 17 and younger, will perform a special version of the
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical “Into the Woods,” from 2
and 4 p.m. Aug. 14, and at 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Neighborhood
Congregational Church’s Bridge Hall, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.

FOA celebrates life and surfing
The Festival of Arts is celebrating surfing and living on the
California Coast with “Surf’s Up” from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 14. The
event will explore everything from surfboards to beachwear to popular
surfing tunes.
“Surfs Up” celebrates the history of surfing, as well as the
lifestyle of Southern California coastal residents. Tide pool and
marine life programs along with a hands-on exhibit of live coastal
creatures will be displayed.
Attendees will also view a vintage collection of surfboards --
from the Surfing Heritage Foundation -- watch a beachwear fashion
show and enjoy reviewing a collection of vintage Hawaiian shirts, all
to live surf music. Surf-related films will be shown in the Forum
Theatre until 4 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students, and
include the surf festivities. Laguna residents get in free every day.

Museum seeking artists and designers
Laguna Art Museum is seeking Orange County artists and designers
working in all media for “The OsCene in Contemporary Art and
Culture,” exhibit that will show Nov. 7 through February.
It will be a survey exhibition of Orange County artists working in
all media. Work produced within the last two years is sought.
Send a resume/bio, an artist statement and materials in any format
that best presents the work, and enclose a self-addressed stamped
envelope with enough postage for the return of materials. Do not send
originals.
Studio visits will be scheduled through early October. Send
