Newport man again on disease-fighting board
Newport Beach resident Robert M. Bennett has been re-elected as
chairman of the board of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn.
Bennett, owner and founder of Los Angeles-based Bennett
Productions Inc., has been chosen as board chairman for the 10th
consecutive year.
The nonprofit organization maintains 235 clinics nationwide,
including clinics at UCLA and the Hospital of the Good Samaritan at
the University of Southern California.
Corona del Mar tiles are better by the hundreds
Commemorative tiles purchased from the Corona del Mar Centennial
Foundation may be painted and decorated at Color Me Mine in Triangle
Square.
The store has launched a community project together with the
foundation so that families can buy a tile for $100 and decorate it
with the store’s help. Once completed, the tile will be displayed on
the Commemorative Tile Memory Wall at the Centennial Plaza in Corona
del Mar. Centennial celebrations will be underway from Oct. 14 to 17.

Costa Mesa taking on block parties interest
The city of Costa Mesa is taking applications for Labor Day block
parties.
Those interested must complete an application and provide evidence
of liability insurance coverage for the event.
Applications are available only by request or through the city’s
website at www.ci.costa-mesa.ca.us.
For phone requests, residents are asked to call the city manager’s
office at (714) 754-5327. Completed applications must be submitted by
5 p.m. on Aug. 23 and may be mailed to Costa Mesa City Hall, PO Box
1200, Costa Mesa, CA 92628-1200.
Performing Arts Center takes musical to bank
The Orange County Performing Arts Center has added Disney’s new
musical, “On the Record,” to this year’s Bank of America Broadway
Series.
The show will feature more than 60 favorite Disney tunes such as
“Someday My Prince Will Come,” “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” and “Hakuna
Matata.”
“On the Record” will run from Sept. 6 to 18 in Segerstrom Hall. It
will take the place of “Wonderful Town,” which has been withdrawn
following the cancellation of its national tour.
Balanchine shows to honor dancer’s birthday
The Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa will host
“Balanchine 100: the Centennial Celebration” performed by the New
York City Ballet from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3.
Through 2004, the ballet company has offered this birthday
celebration for choreographer and company co-founder George
Balanchine that includes some of his classic works.
Tickets cost from $25 to $95 with sales beginning Aug. 15. They
are available from the Performing Arts Center box office, 600 Town
Center Drive, Costa Mesa, by calling (714)556-2787, or online at
