UC Irvine signs five prospects to squad
The UC Irvine men’s soccer program signed five players to national
letters of intent, Coach George Kuntz announced Thursday.
The Anteaters return all but three from its starting roster in
2003. This year’s signed players will add size, strength, and speed
to an already skillful and quick team in 2004, Kuntz believes.
The five players include Andrew Elliott, a 6-foot-1 forward out of Paisley, Scotland, and a member of the Scotland national youth team
(developmental squad). Elliott played club for Paisley United and was
named the Player of the Year after finishing as the club’s top goal
scorer.
Other newcomers are Matt Brummett, Charles McKay, Matt Murphy and
David Millar.
Brummett, a 5-9 midfielder from Fountain Valley, was an All-Sunset
League choice and team captain, while leading the team in scoring.
McKay, a 6-2 forward from University of San Diego High, was an
all-league pick last year and was the school’s Impact Player of the
Year 2004 as a striker. In the past two seasons he scored 17 and 18
goals, respectively, in 14 games.
Mater Dei’s Murphy, a 5-11 defender, was a two-time all-league
player and named the school’s Offensive MVP his senior year.
Millar, a 5-11 defender from Los Alamitos, earned Defensive Player
of the Year honors for the 2001 Griffins and the Coaches’ Award in
2004.
