Breakers break losing streak

The Newport Beach Breakers snapped a three-game losing streak by
defeating the New York Sportimes at Harbor Island Stadium Saturday
night in World Team Tennis action.
The Breakers (8-5) took advantage of the Bryan brothers’ presence,
getting wins in the men’s singles, mixed doubles and men’s doubles
sets.
Bob Bryan started the night off for the Breakers in men’s singles,
beating Hermes Gamonal, 5-4 (2). Mike Bryan and Nana Miyagi played
the mixed doubles third set, beating Gamonal and Bea Bielik, 5-4 (4).
The Bryans polished off Gamonal and Joe Siranni, 5-2, in men’s
doubles.
Aniko Kapros did not play for Newport and will sit out the
remainder of the season. Kapros has pain in her right knee, but
Breaker officials would not confirm the reason for her sitting for
the rest of the season.
Stephanie Hazlett, Kapros’ replacement, teamed with Miyagi to
defeat Bielik and Ruxandra Dragomir, 5-4 (4), in women’s doubles, but
lost to Bielik, 5-4 (1), in singles.
The win cemented a spot in the league playoffs on Arthur Ashe
Kids’ Day, the Saturday before the start of the U.S. Open in Flushing
Meadows, N.Y.
May, Walsh forfeit final
* VOLLEYBALL: The top-seeded duo of former Newport Harbor High
volleyball standout Misty May and Kerri Walsh won twice to reach
Saturday’s women’s final of the Hermosa Beach Open, but the two
forfeited the championship match, giving Holly McPeak and partner
Elaine Youngs, the second-seeded team, the victory.
May and Walsh defeated Carrie Busch and Nancy Mason, 21-15, 21-18,
in a 37-minute quarterfinal match before downing Barbra Fontana and
Jennifer Kessy, 16-21, 21-12, 17-15, in the semifinals.
May and Walsh, along with McPeak and Youngs, will represent the
United States in the Olympics Aug. 14-25.
