INSIDE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Here are some decisions coming out of Tuesday night’s Newport-Mesa
Unified School District meeting.
STRATEGIC PLAN
The board of trustees received revised copies of the strategic
plan, which will map the school district’s plan for the next five
years. Trustees voted to accept the plan for review.
WHAT IT MEANS
Following a study session last month, staff members made revisions
to the plan that trustees had recommended. Trustees will have some
time to review the plan before an additional meeting is scheduled to
finalize it.
Some of the key points in the plan include increasing student
access to education, high school redesign, technology literacy and
arts instruction.
The board will seek public input before a final vote, most likely
in October, to implement the plan. Board President Dana Black was
absent.
INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES
Trustees voted to approve waiver requests for some schools to
deviate from the state-mandated requirements for instructional
minutes. With their approval, they will be sent to the state for
approval there.
WHAT IT MEANS
School districts submit the waivers annually to the state. Some
schools rework their schedules to allow early dismissal some days so
staff members can meet.
Lincoln and Rea elementary schools, TeWinkle Middle School, Ensign
Intermediate School and Newport Harbor, Costa Mesa and Estancia high
schools asked to change their instructional minutes from mandates.
Orange Coast Middle College High School requested a different
academic calendar to align its schedule with Orange Coast College.
