Newport Beach honors Argus crew for rescue

The city of Newport Beach presented the Mayor’s Award on Tuesday

to Captain Fred Bockmiller and crew members of the tall ship Argus,

which docks at the Boy Scouts’ Newport Sea Base, for courageously

rescuing a diver who was lost in the high seas.

The man in the water was Dan Carlock, a scuba diver from Long

Beach, who had gotten lost and wandered about 10 miles away from

where he had started. When the Argus found him, he was wearing a

wetsuit and was in the early stages of hypothermia. But the 13 high

school students from San Diego and the crew members under

Bockmiller’s direction pulled the man to safety.

The incident happened in April and was mentioned in the Oprah

Winfrey Show. Bockmiller, who has captained the Argus for 25 years,

said this was the ship’s first-ever rescue.
