Mesa A.D. Perkins steps down

Dave Perkins, who has been the Costa Mesa High boys athletic director

the past two years, has resigned from the position, but will continue

to coach the Mustangs’ football team, assistant principal Kirk

Bauermeister said.

Perkins’ resignation is the fourth within the Costa Mesa athletic

department during the past three months. Serven, who is an assistant

at Mater Dei, resigned as boys basketball coach in April. Doug Deats

also stepped down as baseball coach and Perkins said Glenn Mitchell

is no longer the boys and girls track and field coach.

“I’m resigning because of the time commitment,” Perkins said. “It

took away from being with my family. My daughter is an athlete. She

is 10 and plays softball and travel softball. I had to make a

decision and one of them had to give and it was the athletic director

job.”

Perkins said he is excited about the upcoming football season. He

also said he enjoyed his time as coach.

“I loved working with all the coaches,” Perkins said. “It was

great working with great people. Sharon Uhl [the girls athletic

director] is great. It was just a great position. Maybe later in the

future I will consider to do it again. At this point in time it just

wasn’t viable for me.”

Assistant principal Kirk Bauermeister said he noticed the athletic

director job being a bit too much for Perkins.

“The biggest thing [about Perkins’ resignation], is that we all

came to understand being the head football coach and the athletic

director is almost like two full-time jobs,” said Bauermeister, the

boys athletic director before Perkins.

Perkins was not on the interviewing board that was involved in

hiring Costa Mesa’s new boys basketball coach recently. However,

Bauermeister said it is customary that one athletic director be

involved in a hiring process, and Sharon Uhl, the girls A.D., was.

Bauermeister said Perkins resignation became official July 1.

Bauermeister said the school will advertise the position and field

interviews in the coming weeks.
