Man charged after arrest at JWA

A 65-year-old Yorba Linda man was arrested Wednesday on federal

charges of attempting to carry a loaded gun and a knife onto a flight

leaving John Wayne Airport, officials said.

Ali Reza Khatami turned himself in after he was named in a federal

criminal complaint on Tuesday that alleges one count of attempting to

carry a dangerous weapon onto an aircraft, federal officials said.

The charge stems from a June 24 incident, when Khatami reportedly

tried to get onto a United Airlines flight leaving Orange County’s

airport with a fully-loaded .38-caliber Colt revolver in his carry-on

bag, which he placed through the security screening machine. The gun

was hidden in an oven mitten, officials said.

Khatami faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The

Transportation Security Administration is investigating the case.
