Here are some of the items discussed at the Huntington Beach City

Council meeting:

CITY CLERK TAKES OFFICE

Joan Flynn was sworn in as the City Clerk.

WHAT IT MEANS

Flynn will fill the post, vacated by longtime City Clerk Connie

Brockway who retired last month, until the November elections.

Brockway stepped down because of a family illness. Since Brockway’s

term didn’t expire until November, the council chose to open the

temporary spot to interested candidates.

Flynn, 51, who worked in the a Public Works Department, was chosen

over Deputy City Clerk Liz Ehring, who has taken over Brockway’s

duties since the former city clerk retired.

The new clerk thanked Ehring for helping her adjust to the new

position.

POLICE PREPARATIONS

Police Chief Ken Small gave a power point presentation about how

his department will handle the Fourth of July. The presentation

outlined Small’s plan to “Maintain balanced enforcement with zero

tolerance for lawbreakers.”

WHAT IT MEANS

California Highway Patrol, the Orange County Sheriffs Office and

volunteers will assist Huntington Beach officers during the parade.

This will free up more officers to be on duty at night.

Small warned residents that CHP and sheriffs deputies would not be

able to answer questions and give information as Surf City officers

normally do. The pier will close at 5 p.m., which he said should not

be a problem as it has been done in the past.
