Weichert honored
UC Irvine senior middle blocker Kyle Weichert has been named an
Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation scholar-athlete for
men’s volleyball.
Weichert, a graduate student in urban and regional planning, was
also named to the College Sports Information Directors of America
All-America All-District VIII men’s at-large first team this year.
Chosen four times as UCI’s Big West Conference men’s
scholar-athlete, Weichert averaged 2.06 blocks per game and was
ranked 12th nationally and fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation in blocking average (1.36).
He was named AVCA National Player of the Week as well as MPSF
Player of the Week after leading UCI to its second consecutive MPSF
tournament appearance.
This year, Weichert set the school career record for block assists
(374) and hitting percentage (.348) and school single-season marks
for block assists (153) and hitting percentage (.373).
Honorees must have had a 3.0 or better cumulative grade-point
average, be at least a sophomore academically, have completed one
full academic year at his institution and must have competed in 50%
or more of the institution’s contests.
CdM’s Bradbury swings hot bat
* BASEBALL: Corona del Mar High senior Josh Brabury had RBI
singles in two of his three at-bats Tuesday as a member of the South
at the Orange County All-Star baseball game at La Palma Park.
Anteaters’ Curtis, Turpin lauded
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine track and field standouts Erin Curtis
and Annmarie Turpin have been named second-team Academic All-America
District VIII second team by the College Sports Information Directors
of America.
Curtis is a junior majoring in biological sciences. She won the
pole vault title at the Big West Conference championships with a mark
of 12-3 1/2 and qualified for the NCAA Western regional last month.
Curtis set the school record of 13-2 1/4 in 2003.
Turpin, a graduate student majoring in demographic and social
analysis, competes in the heptathlon at the NCAA championships in
Austin, Texas, today and Thursday .
The 2003 Big West champion in the heptathlon, she was on a
school-record pace in this year’s competition after three events, but
injured her hamstring in the 200 meters and was forced to pull out.
Turpin’s best of 5,332 points in the heptathlon ranks fourth
all-time at UCI. She was named UCI’s female Big West Scholar-Athlete
of the Year earlier this spring.
To be considered for the award, nominees must be a starter or
important reserve, have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point
average and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic
standing.
Sea Kings’ riders celebrate season
* EQUESTRIAN: The Corona del Mar equestrian team celebrated one of
its most successful seasons at the recent Interscholastic Equestrian
League awards banquet.
CdM finished runner-up in the overall team season competition,
which included riders in varsity, junior varsity, freshman, novice
divisions, as well as dressage and western novice divisions.
The CdM varsity captured the team championship for the third
straight season, led by Whitney Roy, who was second in the varsity
individual season points race.
CdM’s Cliff Bohard earned the season championship in varsity
jumpers.
Roy was also runner-up for the season in working hunters and
equitation over fences, while teammates Kate Wilson (varsity jumpers)
and Julia Koetting (varsity hunt seat equitation) also earned
runner-up status for the season in their respective events.
Elyse Avila was third in the English pleasure class, while the
rest of the CdM varsity was comprised of Jessica Cardelucci, Nicole
Kim, Sara Mendelsohn and Anne Schroeder.
Katie Jones was junior varsity equitation over fences champion for
CdM, while Karie Peyton also competed on the junior varsity level.
Tina DiSano placed third in dressage training level test 3, while
Melissa Moss competed in the English novice division and Katie Wade
rode in the western novice division.
