A hat trick by Annie Capaldi partnered with solid defense led to
Carden Hall’s 3-0 victory over Newport Heights Saturday evening at
the Costa Mesa Sports Farm Complex in girls third- and fourth-grade
quarterfinal action. The Eagles will play Kaiser today at 10:30 a.m.
with the winner advancing to the championship game at 2 p.m.
Nicole Zelinski booted a corner kick, which resulted in Capaldi’s
first goal about mid-way through the first half. Zelinski sent a long
pass up the middle to Capaldi near the start of the second half.
Capaldi gathered the ball and blasted a shot from outside the 18-yard
box that was deflected by the goaltender but still crossed the goal
line. Capaldi’s final goal came from inside the box when she lifted
the ball over the goaltender’s outstretched arms.
In other 3-4 quarterfinal play:
* Kaiser 4, Mariners 2:
Kaiser spread the scoring around to advance to the semifinals, but
the Seahawks did not give up.
Cinnamon Sary gave Kaiser a quick lead to start the game followed
by another score by Josie Jogwe.
Mariners fought back by consistently sending the ball up field.
Maddison Wooters gathered one long ball and passed to Shannon Boler
in the 18-yard box, who put the ball into the back of the net. Boler
tied the game moments later when she scored from the left side.
Kaiser goaltender Savannah Gastineau shut down all Mariners
attacks in the second half, and Miranda McFarland and Jill
Messersmith both scored for the 4-2 final. Kaiser will play Carden
Hall today at 10:30 in a semifinal game.
* Harbor Day 2, Our Lady Queen of Angels 0,
Harbor Day goaltender Sarah Cox put on an impressive display in
shutting out Our Lady Queen of Angels Saturday at the Costa Mesa
Sports Farm Complex.
Cox stopped shot after shot, even a penalty kick opportunity, and
helped out the offense by continually kicking the ball past midfield.
Helping out Cox were defenders Corrine Damon, Samantha Knapp and
Allyson Brahs, who controlled much of the action inside the 18-yard
box for Harbor Day.
Maddie O’Connor ended the defensive battle by racing down the
middle of the field and placing a shot inside the left goal post for
the Seahawks. O’Connor went on the offensive again and scored from
the right side to give Harbor Day the 2-0 victory.
Elisabetta Impagliazzo was a major factor for the Our Lady
offense, but the Seahawk defense was too strong.
* Andersen 5, Lincoln 0:
Scarlet Ocuna scored a hat trick by half time to lift Andersen to
the semifinals today against Harbor Day at 10:30 a.m., with the
winner playing in the championship game at 2 p.m.
Ellie Rich took a corner early in the game and deposited it to the
back of the net for an early Dolphin advantage.
Ocuna took another corner kick and sent it across the goal line a
2-0 lead. Mary McKenna sent a centering pass to Ocuna, who gathered
the ball and fired a shot for her second goal of the night. Ocuna put
the game out of reach by scoring on another corner kick before the
first half ended.
Hollace Bartem took a pass from Lindsay Susolick in the second
half and scored the final goal of the game.
