Adoption Guild opens today
The 43rd annual Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Tennis Classic starts
today at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club, Palisades Tennis Club, Racquet
Club of Irvine and SeaCliff Tennis Club. The June 5-6 finals will be
held at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
An estimated 500 players are expected to participate in the
tournament, some traveling from as far as Atlanta. There are men’s
and women’s as well as mixed brackets with divisions ranging from
open to novice.
All of the net proceeds are donated to Holy Family Services, a
nondenominational, non-profit organization that provides pregnancy
counseling, foster care and adoption services for families in Orange
County and surrounding areas.
Lions head into finals
* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University junior Christol McDonald
qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run of the NAIA national
championships at the University of Louisville. She ran 2:14.49
Friday, over two seconds faster than her time in the preliminaries
Thursday.
Also competing in the finals today is VU marathoner senior Mikael
Larsson.
Sarah Hall and Matt Meyer finished fifth and 11th, respectively,
in their heats of the 1,500, but failed to advance to the finals.
Huskies hold off UCI
* BASEBALL: UC Irvine and junior ace pitcher Brett Smith lost at
the University of Washington, 5-3, in a nonconference baseball game
Friday.
Tim Stewart doubled in two runs with two outs in the ninth, but
the rally ended there for the Anteaters, who fell to 34-19-1.
Jordan Szabo and David Kennedy had two hits apiece for UCI.
Washington improved to 35-18-1.
