The Laguna Beach under-14 Spring Select soccer team earned a
fourth-place finish last weekend at the AYSO RexTravaganza tournament
held in Temecula.
Laguna advanced to the final four of the eight-team tournament on
the strength of its goal average.
Laguna opened the tournament with a resounding, 4-0, victory over
Rancho Santa Margarita.
In its next match, Laguna fought a team from Mission Viejo to a
scoreless tie, then dropped a tough, 1-0, decision to another Mission
Viejo squad.
In the final four round, Laguna was edged by Laguna Niguel, 2-1.
“I thought the girls did a terrific job,” Laguna Coach Gareth
Butler said. “We annihilated that first team and each game after that
was a close, hard-fought match.
“It was an exciting tournament and it’s great to see the
improvement in the girls’ skills throughout the season. They’ve done
unbelievably well since this team formed a few months ago.”
Next up for Laguna under-14 Spring Select team is the Mission
Viejo Classic June 12-13.
The under-14 Spring Select team is composed of Maya Butler,
Madeline Arterburn, Mandy Michaeli, Aedan Arko, Holden Penney, Emily
Cronin, Alexa Kaplan, Ali Terwilliger, Allegra Mount, Azure Cooper,
Rosalie Cebreros and Casey Stearns.
