OCC great dies in crash
Craig Zaltosky, a two-time Junior College All-American free safety at
Orange Coast College, died Monday night in an automobile accident in
Kona, Hawaii, where he lived.
Zaltosky, 52, set several school records while at Coast for the
1970 and ’71 seasons before playing two years at Stanford University.
The Huntington Beach High graduate holds school records for
interceptions in a season (11), game (six) and two-year career (17),
punt returns (59) and punt returns for touchdowns (four).
“[Zaltosky] was probably the most spectacular defensive back we’ve
ever had at [OCC],” said Dick Tucker, his former coach who guided the
Pirates for 24 years. “People would come to our games just to watch
him play.”
The Pirates went 13-5-1 during Zaltosky’s two seasons, which
included a South Coast Conference title.
Zaltosky, nicknamed “Zeek” by his OCC teammates, moved to Kona
several years ago to start his own business.
Services are pending in Kona and a memorial scholarship will be
established at Coast in Zaltosky’s honor.
