Newport’s Adams signs

Bonnie Adams, a Newport Harbor High senior standout for the

Sailors’ girls tennis team, has signed a letter of intent to play for

the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Adams, who helped lead the Sailors to the Sea View League title,

teamed up with Vanessa Dunlap to win the Sea View League doubles

championship. The duo reached the Round of 16 in the CIF Southern

Section doubles tournament.

Adams, a team captain who was voted MVP of the squad, also earned

first-team all-league honors.

Anteaters in regionals

* TRACK AND FIELD: Eight athletes will represent UC Irvine in the

NCAA West regionals at Cal State Northridge Friday and Saturday.

Senior Annmarie Turpin, who was a regional qualifier in the high

jump, will not compete this weekend as she is rehabbing her hamstring

injury sustained in the Big West Conference championships earlier

this month. She hopes to be ready for the heptathlon competition in

the NCAA championships at Austin, Tex., June 9-10. She ranks 11th

nationally with a total of 5,332 points that she recorded in the Mt.

SAC Relays Heptathlon April 14-15.

The Anteater competitors on Friday at the NCAA West regional are

Mike Beerer (hammer), John Wratten (high jump), Erin Curtis and

Kirsten Loftin (women’s pole vault), Tom Whelan (1,500 meters), Derek

Kingrey (shot put), Scott Jarvis and Dayne Comrie (400). Orlisha

Henlon (women’s high jump) will compete Saturday.
