Jack O’Connel
There will be a memorial for Jack O’Connell at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in
Heisler Park near the Myrtle Street picnic tables. Bring a folding
chair.
O’Connell was a longtime Laguna resident who died on Feb. 8. He
was 67. He worked as a handyman and could often be seen around town
in his bright blue van.

Kurt Barton Redfern
Kurt Barton Redfern of Laguna Beach died May 18 of melanoma. He
was 55.
Mr. Redfern enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1969 and retired as
a Colonel in 1993. He moved with his wife to Laguna Beach in 1973. In
1978 he took a civilian job as a pilot flying C-130 and 747 cargo
planes around the world.
Mr. Redfern is survived by his wife of 33 years, Claudia Doyle;
his two daughters, Maggie and Carrie; his mother, Carol Braden of
Phoenix, Ariz; his sister Linda Rivera; and his brother Mike.
A service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Laguna
Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave.
Ervin Lewis Watkins
Laguna resident Ervin “Erv” Lewis Watkins, also known as “Doc” has
died. He was 91.
Mr. Watkins’ grandparents owned a two-bedroom cottage on Main
Beach, bought in 1903 for $1,000. He was the son of Lynn and Anna
Watkins.
He graduated from Tustin High School in 1930 -- back before there
was a Laguna Beach High School. He played football and baseball with
the Santa Ana College “Dons” and attended USC Dental College.
He married his high school sweetheart, Vera Kathleen McDonald, in
1938.
“Doc” Watkins practiced dentistry in Laguna until 1943 when he was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Navy, based in San Diego. He
resumed his practice in Laguna from 1946 to 1958.
Mr. Watkins is preceded in death by his wife, Vera; son David; and
brother Bud. He is survived by his sons Lynn Ervin Watkins II of
Laguna Beach and Warren Lee Watkins of Healsburg, Calif.; six
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
