Capturing children in
the best light possible
In a story that ran in Tuesday’s Daily Pilot, “State of
education,” photographer Kent Treptow brilliantly captured the total
absorption and lack of self-consciousness that cauterizes children
immersed in the learning process.
The body positions and lighting of the two children are
outstanding.

Four Seasons Hotel
is a community pillar
Your In Business story Monday “Swiss mister comes back to the
beach,” describing the Four Seasons Hotel Newport Beach as an
outstanding asset for the community, is right on.
Both of my daughters were married there, we held our 50th
anniversary party there, have attended numerous social and charitable
events at the hotel, and have enjoyed dining in the Pavilion
restaurant.
I well recall the battle about 20 years ago when the Irvine Co.
wanted to build a hotel in Newport Center -- the anti-growth crowd
strongly opposed it with all of the usual anti-hotel rhetoric:
traffic, prostitutes, minority workers and every other trumped-up
excuse.
In those days, approval required only Planning Commission and City
Council votes, which were not easy to get, but at least could be
accomplished.
If a community-wide vote were required during all of the
anti-growth shouting, we would never have had this lovely addition to
our community.

Corona del Mar
Grade-changing editorial
deserving of high marks
Regarding Sunday’s editorial concerning grade changing at Corona
del Mar High School, “What value is there in cheating?” I agree with
student Amber Peck’s assessment of the cheaters: “why not study
instead ... and then you don’t have to worry about being caught,” and
the Pilot’s assessments: “those who cheat the system do a double
disservice. They hurt themselves by failing to see right from wrong
... they create an unfair playing field ... those who cheat are only
fooling themselves ... it is not long before they are discovered and
when they are, it results in a scarlet letter that is almost
impossible to remove.”
These are very refreshing opinions, much better than just passing
it off as an attempt by the cheaters to just “create a better life
for themselves” through cheating.
Maybe someday your paper will think the same of the millions who
cheat our immigration system by cutting in line ahead of those who
file immigration papers, wait their turn and come here legally.
