Sea Kings’ Miller earns MVP award
Corona del Mar High junior Wesley Miller, who won the Pacific Coast
League singles title, has been named the league’s Most Valuable
Player by PCL boys tennis coaches.
Miller is joined on the first team by teammates Carsten Ball, a
junior singles standout, and Spencer Reitz, also a junior singles
performer.
CdM is represented on the second team by doubles players Alex
Nguyen Ryan Caughren and Brennan Roberts.
Nguyen, a junior, teamed with Sean Pham to win the PCL doubles
crown, after playing most of the season with Roberts, a senior who
missed the league tournament due to advance-placement tests.
Caughren, a freshman, finished third in the league singles
tournament, though his regular-season contribution was primarily in
doubles.
These honorees helped lead CdM, the reigning CIF Southern Section
Division I champion and the No. 1 seed for this year’s playoffs, to
another Pacific Coast League crown.

Mardh Lion of Week
* TENNIS: Vanguard University sophomore men’s tennis standout
Philip Mardh, whose victory at No. 5 singles was the decisive point
in a 5-0 NAIA Region II tournament semifinal victory over Pt. Loma
Nazarene May 6, has been named Lion of the Week by the school’s
athletic department.
Mardh, from Stockholm, Sweden, has been a big part of Vanguard’s
success in 2004. The NAIA’s No. 3-ranked team takes a 19-5 record
into the NAIA tournament next week in Mobile, Ala.
Mardh defeated Pt. Loma’s Josh Cowen, 6-0, 6-1, in Santa Barbara
to propel the Lions into the championship match won by top-ranked
Azusa Pacific.
A business administration major, Mardh is 18-3 in singles and 12-7
