ON THE AGENDA
These are some of the items that the Huntington Beach City Council
will consider at its next meeting:
BANNING SMOKING ON BEACHES
City Councilman Gil Coerper wants Huntington Beach to join a
growing number of Southern California cities to ban smoking on the
beach.
The Malibu City Council voted Monday to give preliminary approval
to a ban of smoking in city beaches. Bans have also recently been
approved in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, San Clemente and Solano Beach.
Cigarette butts and used matches make up a huge source of litter
at Surf City beaches. At a Coastal Cleanup Day in 2002, more than
300,000 cigarettes were removed. Secondhand smoke also endangers
children and adults.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Coerper wants to direct staff members to prepare an ordinance that
would ban smoking on the beach, in coastal waters and in adjacent
areas, such as the Huntington Beach Pier.
The ordinance would have to be approved at a future meeting.
NISSAN TO DONATE TRUCKS
Nissan North America, Inc. has offered to provide, free of charge,
17 trucks to the city for at least two years.
If the contract is signed, the Nissan trucks will replace the 20
Chevrolet vehicles that Surf City used for 12 years. Chevy ended the
partnership in October 2003, and the city has since been looking for
new beach transportation.
In the meantime, lifeguards and other beach officials have been
using rental cars and mothballed city vehicles, which make up about
half the original fleet.
The vehicles will be used for marine safety, beach maintenance and
parking and camping operations.
WHAT TO EXPECT
It seems unlikely that council members would oppose the offer of
17 free cars. This should pass easily.
CITY CLERK RECRUITMENT
The City Council will discuss the procedure to appoint a temporary
city clerk to fill in for Connie Brockway, who retired May 5, until
the November election.
After a motion to appoint Deputy City Clerk Liz Ehring failed on a
4 to 3 vote at the May 3 City Council meeting, the council decided 6
to 1 to open the temporary spot to interested candidates.
May 17 is the deadline for applications. City Council members will
then review applications and hold interviews.
For applications, visit the city’s website at https://www.surf
city-hb.org or call the job hotline at (714) 374-1570.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This will probably include an update on the number of applicants
and a discussion on procedure for appointing an interim city clerk.
