Sea King trio nets semifinals
Corona del Mar High’s Wesley Miller, Spencer Reitz and Ryan Caughren
advanced to the singles semifinals of the Pacific Coast League boys
tennis championships Tuesday at Tesoro.
Miller, the top seed who had a first-round bye, defeated Brian
Tran from Northwood, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to a semifinal, where he
will take on his teammate, Caughren, today, at 1 p.m.
Reitz, the No. 2 seed, will face Tesoro’s Nick Meister, also at 1
p.m. today. Retiz defeated David McKiernan of Laguna Beach, 6-0, 6-0,
in the first round. Reitz advanced to the semifinals when he scored a
6-3, 6-0 win over Grant Gordon of University.
Caughren defeated University’s Grant Patterson, 6-0, 6-0, in the
first round and then moved on to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1
victory over Tesoro’s Kevin Kordastani.
Toreros hammer Anteaters
* BASEBALL: The University of San Diego baseball team used three
home runs off six UC Irvine pitchers to post a 6-3 nonconference
victory at Anteater Ballpark Tuesday night.
The Toreros (31-21) scored two runs each in the seventh and eighth
innings and held UCI (31-14-1) scoreless the final six innings.
Jaime Martinez’s two-run home run highlighted a three-run third
for UCI, coming off a sweep of Big West Conference foe Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo last weekend.
UCI starter Justin Cassel allowed one run in three innings,
striking out three with no walks.
San Diego’s Kyle Collins improved to 6-1 with five scoreless
innings of relief. Collins fanned five and allowed five hits.
Mark Wagner, Andy Amara and Matt Anderson each had two hits for
the ‘Eaters, who host Cal State Fullerton in a key three-game
conference series that begins at 7 p.m. Friday.

Newport blanked
* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High senior Jennifer Gummerman
collected two hits, but the Sailors softball team lost, 10-0, to Sea
View League visitor Laguna Hills Tuesday.
Newport junior Ashley Gleason also added a hit, the game’s only
double, while sophomore Katie Daniels provided a single for the
Sailors (8-14-1, 1-8 in league).
Laguna Hills, led by pitcher Sam Hamner (20-4), improved to 23-6,
7-2. Newport Harbor will close out the season against Woodbridge
Thursday at 5 p.m. at Barber Memorial Park in Irvine.
